Lingerie Astrology: What Your Sign Says About Your Boudoir Style

2013 has officially begun and people everywhere are working hard to keep up with their resolutions for the New Year. Whether you strive to improve your weight, finances, happiness or style, you can take comfort in the fact that people all over the world are in the same boat, hoping to keep up the momentum of motivation & inspiration long into the New Year.

It’s a known fact that when you feel better about yourself you look better, attract more admirers and lead a happier lifestyle. And feeling great about yourself can only come from the inside. I’ve learned that others’ opinions are not an accurate way to define yourself and will inevitably lead to self-doubt & confusion. If you take the time to look into yourself and learn about who you are, your needs & what you want out of life, then you are sure to have a better understanding of your true self and in turn will be better equipped with the tools to live a happier & healthier lifestyle.

Personal style is one aspect that can often be an important factor in feeling confident & fulfilled. Style can be a wonderful way to express yourself, giving the world a taste of your individual personality and unique traits. Do you prefer a feminine, girlish style? Or maybe you possess a more classic & mature sensibility? No matter which tastes most appeal to you (or a combination of them all!), you deserve to feel confident and ready to face the world.

The astrological signs are one tool that many people utilize to help them gain a better understanding of their personality traits. While this may be a controversial means of self-discovery, some believers say it helps to guide them on a path to understanding their individuality. Not all people match the qualities of their given astrological sign, yet reading into it can still be a fun way to experiment with different styles & trends that you may like.

Here is a list of some stylish lingerie to coordinate to each of our 12 sun signs. What lingerie style does your sign say about you?

Aries (March 21-April 19)
Adventurous, independent & outgoing the Aries girl is a fearless extrovert with a dynamic personality & spontaneous nature. She is high energy, assertive & magnetic which makes her a fun-loving friend & confidant. As a fire sign she gravitates toward bold, sexy styles & vibrant color such as this daring red Ciao Bella set from B.Tempt’d.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Cool, calm & collected the Taurus girl is known to possess a sensual & emotional spirit. Her serene nature makes her a pleasant & trustworthy companion while her persistence & determination will inspire those around her. The Taurus girl tends to gravitate towards classic fashions in neutral colors making this micromodal chemise from The Naked Princess a perfect choice.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Gemini’s are famous for their curious & sometimes mischievous demeanor. They are natural communicators with an often cheery & optimistic outlook on life, while their thirst for knowledge & dazzling brilliance has been known to catapult them into positions of great popularity. A Gemini girl enjoys fun, flirty fashions such as this Embroidered Kisses set from Betsey Johnson.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
The Cancer girl is ruled by the moon and thus is sensitive & romantic by nature. Her intuitive & eccentric disposition is only eclipsed by her caring & protective nature. Cancers can sometimes be perceived to have a hard exterior but once broken through, their affectionate & emotional soul is revealed. The Andi jumper from Zinke Intimates is an appropriate match for this mysterious moonchild.

Leo (July 23-August 22)
The ruler of the signs, Leo’s are known for their confident & ambitious nature. Big-hearted Leo girls exude charm & charisma making them natural born leaders & trendsetters. This proud lioness gravitates towards bold fashions & warm colors making the Animal Print Chemise from Von Follies by Dita Von Tease a no-brainer for this queen of the astrological kingdom.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Kind-hearted Virgo is often labeled an introvert but her reflective & sensitive demeanor will inevitably make for a caring & cherished friendship. The Virgo girl is thoughtful, compassionate and creative with a desire to help others and an unyielding faith in the human spirit. This virginal sign loves feminine yet natural fashions such as the Keepsake Cami from Fleur Of England.

Libra (September 23-October 22)
Harmony is the name of the game for Libra girls. This self aware and logical sun sign is known to be smart & fair as well as charming & artistic. Her social grace & tact make her an excellent leader as she has many of the traits needed for success. This air sign appreciates beauty in all forms and is sure to adore this Cherry set by Vero Moda.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Passionate Scorpio girls are often inclined to be born winners. Which is understandable since these energetic & powerful girls possess equally emotional & sincere traits. A born flirt, the Scorpio’s flair for the dramatic make for a fun yet intense friendship. Similarly their style tends to skew on the sexy & brazen side, as is the case with this Margot set from Agent Provocateur.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
The adventurous Sagittarius knows how to have a good time in any circumstance. Free spirited & optimistic these girls are excellent at expressing themselves & declaring their independence. Their active nature & gutsy disposition drive them to continually grow & expand their horizons which makes the Insertion set by VPL a perfect fit for Sags with its edgy lines, color blocking & athletic sensibility.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
Capricorn girls tend to be high achievers with patience & perseverance to get them through the toughest of situations. These ambitious ladies may come across as reserved & quiet but their determination, hard work & cautiousness often propel them into positions of great respect. A practical yet fashionable choice for this earth sign is the Fly Butterfly set by Elle Macpherson Intimates.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
Unique & original, the trailblazing Aquarius marches to the beat of her own drum. Don’t let her quirkiness & eccentricities deter you, as Aquarian girls are also outgoing, honest & philanthropic in their offerings. Though this insightful sign can sometimes be a bit extreme, their kindness & amicable nature is an inspiring force to admire. Innovative & abstract pieces such as the Megan set from Myla is a great way for Aquarians to stand out from the crowd.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)
This aquatic sign is mysterious & fantastical in its own right. The Pisces girl is known to have psychic abilities and imaginative properties. She is a true visionary whose sensitive & caring nature makes her invaluable to her friends & family alike. A true water sign, she goes with the flow & adapts to new situations with ease & resilience. The Charlotte Chemise by Samantha Chang is a perfect fit for the Pisces girl with its luxurious fabric & alluring silhouette.

Do you believe in Astrology? Do you feel that your sun sign accurately reflects your personality?

When Icons Falter: A Review of Dita von Teese’s “Strip Strip Hooray!” Show

A week ago last Friday, I attended ‘Strip, Strip, Hooray!’, Dita von Teese’s new burlesque revue. It’s no exaggeration to say I’ve wanted to see Dita perform live for years, and I’d been looking forward to seeing this show for months. In fact, I bought my tickets the very minute (literally) they went on sale. Swarovskis…Louboutins…Mr. Pearl Corsets…what’s not to love?

Yet, I left ‘Strip, Strip, Hooray!’ feeling…conflicted. And in the days I spent days afterwards sorting through my impressions from the show, my sense of conflict turned into a general feeling of disappointment which left me with the surprising realization that, despite my earlier excitement, I’m not really interested in seeing Dita perform live again.

But first of all, let’s start with the good. The show had an amazingly diverse cast in every sense of the word – body type, ethnicity, and gender. There were thin performers (Lada), thick performers (Dirty Martini), performers of color (Perle Noire), male performers (Monsieur Romeo), older performers (Catherine D’Lish), and a performer with what I think was dwarfism (Selene Luna). It was really exciting to me to see so many different kinds of burlesque represented, and our Emcee Murray Hill was super entertaining, keeping the energy high and the laughs loud all night long.

My personal favorite act was Perle Noire’s electric tribute to Josephine Baker (complete with the banana skirt!) though Catherine D’Lish’s sinuous and seductive spiderweb act was a close second. The production value was high, and the performers were obviously at the top of their game.

But what of Dita, the headliner we were all there to see? If I can dare to say it, I felt underwhelmed…like she was the weakest performer of them all.

via: The LA Times

The costumes were gorgeous, it’s true. The shoes, the lingerie, the trademark poses…they were all there, but in a way that felt formulaic and bland, not innovative and groundbreaking. Instead of the spontaneity I love in burlesque (and in live theater, period), all of Dita’s numbers – which included classics like the Martini Glass, Cowgirl, and Makeup Compact – felt predictable and uninspired, the energy replaced with crystals and corsets and set pieces. 10 days later, the most memorable parts of Dita’s acts are the costumes, not the performer or the performance.

Dita von Teese's "Opium Den" Routine

But more than all that, Dita’s final act (which, naturally, is going to be the one people remember most) left me feeling intensely uncomfortable. For those who haven’t seen the show, Dita closes with her Opium Den routine, where she’s clad in an elaborate “Oriental” costume (a word I’m using deliberately as I think it’s negative connotations are appropriate here) and smoking opium just before a set of gloved hands caress her body to (simulated) climax.

After such an enjoyable evening, the Opium Den piece came across as insensitive and regressive, the stereotypical story and costuming an unnecessarily negative finale to an otherwise good show. And I’m not the only one who felt that way. The Shanghai Pearl, a Seattle burlesque performer (and my burlesque teacher) explains the issue so much better than I ever could in this excerpt from a statement on her Facebook page:

“The ‘Strip Strip Hooray!’ show is spectacular and revolutionary in so many different and wonderful ways. However, I was stunned that the finale was an act that perpetuates harmful and negative stereotypes of Asian women. It was very incongruous with the rest of the show.

It would seem that throughout the conception of the act, all the tour planning, and all the press, not one person considered the possibility that the material could be insensitive, harmful, or offensive.

We could do well to be more sensitive and aware of our individual privileges and other people’s experiences.  It is not only our responsibility to one another, but common courtesy to consider others in our actions.

There are many damaging stereotypes and behaviors that used to be widely acceptable and now thankfully, no longer have a positive presence in mainstream thinking. This change is due to people asking speaking up, taking action, and raising awareness.

Silence is the only choice that will keep us from doing better.”

Last week’s vacation gave me the chance to wait awhile before writing this review to see if my impressions of the show changed with a bit of time and distance, but they haven’t. I’m still glad I went to see ‘Strip, Strip, Hooray!’ I’m just not sure I want to go to another of Dita’s shows again.

Have you seen ‘Strip, Strip, Hooray?’ What did you think? Please share your impressions in the comments.

Underwhelming Underwear: Dita Von Teese’s ‘Von Follies’ Collection for Target

While Target is in the news stateside for the circus that was the Jason Wu collection this week, they’re in the news for an entirely different reason in Australia…the release of Dita von Teese’s latest lingerie line, ‘Von Follies by Dita von Teese.’

Dita’s been releasing sneak peeks of her upcoming collection since November (several of which I posted to The Lingerie Addict Tumblr), and with her impeccable style and timeless beauty I’ve been looking forward to the Von Follies range as much as everyone else, especially considering the success of Dita’s previous two lingerie collections with Frederick’s of Hollywood in 2007 and Wonderbra in 2008 and 2009.

Dita von Teese for Frederick's of Hollywood

Dita von Teese for Wonderbra

I loved the sense of pin-up, burlesque, and showmanship she brought to her previous collections. These were pieces meant to be seen, not covered up. And a black lace overwire bra? Ooh la la!

Maybe that’s why I was more than a little disappointed when I saw the full collection on Target Australia this evening. The Dita von Teese brand is all about glamour and opulence and vintage styling but this collection is…boring. Nothing stands out about any of the pieces and makes me say “Now that is something Dita von Teese would wear.” I’d planned on trying to get an item or two sent to me overseas, but I’m a bit less motivated now. Even worse, the standout pieces from the sneak previews (like that overwire bra I was so excited about) are nowhere to be seen. Instead we have a boring beige bra with boring lace overlay to replace it. However, on a positive note though, there are a couple of full bust options, so that’s good.

Maybe I’m looking at this all wrong. Target has never been known for high-end lingerie; even their Josie Natori for Target collection was dissapointing. And it’s entirely possible I’m looking at the Wonderbra and Frederick’s collections through the rose-colored glasses of being new to the world of lingerie at the time they were released. But I simply don’t see this new collection as continuing the spirit of Dita’s previous ones. I’m sure it’ll sell; there’s just no excitement. It’s a generic range.

In all fairness, I haven’t actually seen this collection in person. It’s only available to Australian shoppers and, as you know, I live in the United States. But Super Kawaii Mama (who is completely awesome) did shop the collection today and you can read her opinion over at her blog.

What do you think? Would you buy something from this line if you saw it in stores? Do you live in Australia and have been to see it in person? Let me know in the comments.

The Lingerie That Got Away…3 Pieces I Should’ve Purchased

One of the questions I’m asked most frequently by readers is “What lingerie do you most regret not buying?”  There’s usually at least one thing every season, but the three pieces I’m sharing with you today are my personal “white whales.”  Believe me when I say that if I could do things differently…I would.

Do you have any lingerie regrets?  What do you think about the selections I posted below?  I’d love to hear what you have to say in the comments.

Dita von Teese for Frederick’s of Hollywood Lace Bustier (2007)
Andres Sarda “Christmas Bow” Bra & Panty (2008)
Cameo Intimates Retro Polka Dot Bullet Bra & Garter Panty (2010)

How to Dress Like Dita von Teese

Dita, Dita, Dita…what can I say about her that hasn’t been said already?  From being a muse to couture fashion houses like Jean Paul Gaultier to designing luxury lingerie collections for the likes of Wonderbra and Frederick’s of Hollywood to selling out burlesque and striptease shows worldwide, Dita is more than a woman…she’s an icon.

On the personal side, I love what Dita von Teese has to say about lingerie.  Like her, I believe that “Lingerie is not about seducing men, it’s about embracing womanhood.”  And I also “…love it when you can go about your daily business with the knowledge that you have a little secret of your own underneath.”  With that in mind, why don’t we take a look at a few key pieces that can give anyone a Dita-worthy wardrobe.

Stockings
Dita von Teese is almost never seen without her stockings, and thanks to an exclusive deal with Secrets in Lace, you can wear the exact same nylons that she does in her burlesque shows and stage performances.  The pair shown to the right is the Dita Glamour French Heel, and you can purchase it here.

Corsets
Along with her many talents, Dita is famous for being able to tightlace her corsets from a natural waist size of 22″ down to 16.5.”  While I don’t recommend that kind of extreme body modification (Dita already has an extraordinarily curvy figure), I do recommend the corsets from What Katie Did.  You can buy a basic black underbust (like the one to the right) for less than $200.

Girdles, Garter Belts, & Bullet Bras

A pin-up model’s look isn’t complete without a retro-style bra, and how will your fully-fashioned stockings stay up without the right garter belt?  Fortunately, What Katie Did has you covered.  Authentic vintage patterns inspire all their designs, so whatever you buy will make you look and feel like Ms. von Teese herself.  I recommend the classic Maitresse and Harlow lines.

What do you think of the Dita von Teese phenomena? Please share your thoughts with me in the comments!
