After years of anticipation, Claire Pettibone, the designer behind some of the most gorgeous wedding gowns in the world, has finally released her debut bridal luxury lingerie collection, appropriately titled "Heirloom."
I first covered this collection, photographed by the inimitable Elizabeth Messina, right around the time of my wedding, and I remember hoping - very nearly praying - that something would be available for me to buy in time for my honeymoon. While that wasn't to be, I am incredibly pleased the collection is available purchase now, not only for future brides, but for the everyday appreciator of fine lingerie.
For me, the Camelot Robe is the standout piece from an undeniably stellar collection. One of the things I miss when comparing lingerie of today to that of the past is the sense of drama. Lingerie nowadays, especially in the United States, is chiefly concerned with practicality and invisibility (and, of course, expense...or the lack thereof). As a result, so much of what's out there winds up looking more or less the same. The American lingerie market is, on the whole, rather conservative, and that absolutely affects the options available to the typical consumer.
Reminiscent of vintage peignoirs, Claire Pettibone's Camelot Robe, made of tulle and silk and embroidered lace, is the stuff of dreams. Delicate, ethereal, unique... this is lingerie to pass down for generations, and I trust it will look just as elegant and classic 50 years from now as it does today.
It should go without saying that this is a luxury garment. At just under $2,000 ($1,975 to be exact), the Camelot Robe is not about accessibility no matter the budget.
