12 Beautiful Plus Sized Bikinis for This Summer

With the first day of summer only five days away, and 4th of July weekend only another two weeks after that, it’s time (or past time, depending on your point of view) to start thinking about swimsuits. Swimsuit sizing, while not quite as finicky as lingerie, is still subject to a ton of inter- and intra- brand variation. I have swimsuits that are a couple of sizes larger than my ‘normal’ dress size (Hello, Jantzen), and I also have swimsuits I need to go down a size in (Hi, Kiss Me Deadly). It’s a wild world out there, and I imagine it’s even worse if you happen to be beyond a US size 10 or so.

Fortunately, the swimwear industry has picked up on the demand for plus sized swim and developed a wide range of options in recent years. Gabi Fresh’s Swimsuits for All range is one of the most popular recent lines. Independent labels like Nakimuli, Monif C., and Rue 107 are also popular and have a dedicated customer base. Even larger retailers, like Target and Modcloth, are committing to showing plus sized swimsuits on plus sized models (which should be the norm instead of newsworthy, but that’s a conversation for another day).

While working on this blog post, I was pleasantly surprised at the sheer variety of options available. For so long, plus sized swimwear was all about looking slimmer, and then, after that, it was all about the pinup look (which is cute, but definitely not everyone’s aesthetic). Now, as a direct result of the dialogue that’s happening around plus size style, we’re seeing more fashion-forward, editorially-driven swimwear. And that’s a wonderful thing because more options are better for everyone.

The swimsuits below are ones that’ve made a distinct impression on me within the last few weeks (i.e. my faves). If you have a much-loved swimsuit that’s not included, I’d love it if you added a link in the comments. There’s really no downside to having more choices.

If you’re a plus sized lingerie addict, where do you buy your bathing suits? And do you have any shopping tips?

I am soooooo glad that the high waisted trend is in because they are SO comfortable and flattering. I got a tankini + bottom from Target’s Ava & Viv line and they’re comfortable and cute. I feel like for so long plus-sized women got to wear bathing suits designed for older women (much more matronly styles) so it’s nice having cute and trendy options!!
