I have a slight vintage swimwear obsession, and that obsession is focused on one brand in particular — Cole of California. I don’t know the first time I ran across Cole of California (it was probably on eBay way, way back), but I do know their classic mesh v-neck swimsuit, also known as “The Scandal Suit,” is the stuff dreams are made of. I can’t include any photos in this post due to copyright reasons, but you can find images of the classic suit here, here, and here.
Yeah, it’s awesome, right?
Considering that these suits now retail for hundreds of dollars on eBay and Etsy (I’m biting my lip over these three versions in particular: 1, 2, 3), the chances of me owning one are pretty much nil. Not only do they tend to be prohibitively (but justifiably) expensive, the ones for sale are often a size small or extra small… which is honestly pretty typical for vintage lingerie and swim. I’d resigned myself to never tasting the greatness that is the Scandal suit, until that is, I ran across the beauty featured in this blog post. And if you know TLA, you know we’re talking about the suit, not the model (though she’s gorgeous too).
After what I’m certain was an innumerable number of requests, Vintage Suits by Mary has released her own version of the classic Cole of California bathing suit. No, it’s not exactly the same as the original, but it’s close enough. Better still, she’s remade the faux-bikini and leopard print versions as well. I hadn’t been in the market for a new swimsuit, but Vintage Suits by Mary may have just changed my mind. All suits are available in sizes XS thru XL and retail for $97. Each suit is handmade to order, and there’s around a 30-day turnaround time. What does all that mean for you? Well, if you placed an order, you’d definitely get it in time for the sunshine (assuming you live in the Northern Hemisphere, of course).
What do you think of the reimagined Scandal swimsuit? Is this something you would wear?
