Walking into CURVE New York on February, 25 mannequins representing ten years of iconic lingerie trends greeted me. While the lingerie styles displayed were aesthetically diverse, all the mannequins wore the same size. I feel like that’s a metaphor for what it’s like to be plus size in an industry still very straight size focused. So much design innovation…but when it comes to those trends appearing in plus, it feels like we’re invisible.
I won’t lie…the $500+ Lingerie Shopping Guide is always my most favorite one to do. Even though I can’t afford a single, solitary thing on this list, I like looking, imagining that someday, somehow fantasy where I have the disposable income to spend a month’s rent or so on a nightgown.
We’re well into the luxury category now. The $250 to $499 price range is where you see unique (often exclusive or in-house designed) prints, laces, and embroideries as well as extremely fine grades of silk and tulle.
Every year, I think about collapsing the traditional five Holiday Lingerie Shopping Guides into two or three. Maybe doing two shopping guide for everything that’s under $249 and over $250, for example. And honestly, because I’ve been having so much trouble with time management this season, that may have been a good idea. Yet part of why I like to break out TLA’s Holiday Shopping Guides into so many price categories is because I believe it better conveys the story of lingerie. You can see how trends and patterns and silhouettes change between that $50 guide and that $500 guide. The drape is different. The shapes are different. The levels experimentation, playfulness, artistry – it’s all different.
Edge O’ Beyond is a brand that made a huge splash when it first emerged onto the lingerie scene: its distinctive pairing of luxury laces with gold plated chain jewellery made quite the impression, with the brand picking up numerous noteworthy stockists for its debut collection (a rare thing indeed in today’s conservative marketplace). When Cora asked me to review the ‘Becca’ set from its first collection, I jumped at the chance to actually experience the lingerie for myself: could the product live up to the hype?
