Where to Buy Nylon Stockings

Fancy Heeled Vintage Stockings – Image Scan via Slip of a Girl

Today, May 14, is the 73rd anniversary of the nylon stocking, which was first introduced by the DuPont Company at the 1939 World’s Fair. Before nylon, stockings had been made of cotton, wool, rayon, or silk…materials which were either too bulky and warm to wear comfortably year-round or too fine and delicate to wear all day without tearing.

When I first started blogging, it was as Stockings Addict, so hosiery will always hold a special place in my heart. I love how stockings can instantly make any outfit more sophisticated, more stylish, and, yes, more sexy just by their presence. Unfortunately, stockings have been waning in popularity for years now, and you only have to look at the photo at the top of this post to see that stockings today are far less elegant than those of previous decades.

But for those who still enjoy a fancy nylon stocking, all isn’t lost. A few companies, like Cervin, still produce creative, fashion-forward styles, and the machines of today allow for combinations that could only be dreamed of in the 1960′s.

The Parts of a Fully-Fashioned Stocking

If you’re new to stockings, there may be a few terms in this post you don’t recognize, so let’s do a quick review. A Stocking (unlike pantyhose, tights, or thigh highs) requires a garter belt to keep it on the leg. RHT stands for Reinforced Heel and Toe. Fully Fashioned Stockings (like the one shown above) are made in the vintage style, sewn flat and then stitched up the back with a fully-functional backseam and trademark keyhole. Cuban and Havana Heels are squared off at the top, while French Heel stockings come to a point. Fancier styles, like Manhattan Heels, have an outline around the heel and foot. Non-stretch Stockings are more authentic as they’re made of 100% nylon, but have no “give.” Stretch Stockings, made of a nylon/lycra blend, are less authentic but more resistant to tearing.

And a few quick notes when it comes to hosiery care, especially for the stockings listed below. 1) Invest in a pair of hosiery gloves. 2) Purchase a specialty hosiery wash like Hosiery Mate. 3) And always, always, always hand wash and hang to dry.

And now that we’ve covered a few of the basics, let’s move on to the stockings…

1) Kay Marel “New York” Bows

2) Kay Marel “New York” Skyscraper

Kay Marel
No one makes stockings like Kay Marel anymore, and believe me, I’ve looked. These authentic fully-fashioned nylons from the 1950′s are almost a steal at $32.50, and the skyscraper and bow fancy heels look like something straight off the set of Mad Men. Unfortunately, if you’re not petite (that is, if you’re over 5’4″) these stockings aren’t a good fit for you. They simply won’t come up high enough on the leg. To illustrate, I’m 5’8″, and they came to just above the knee on me. Height issues aside though, these are fabulous nylons.

3) Secrets in Lace Diamond Backseam

4) Secrets in Lace “Cabaret” Manhattan Heel

5) Secrets in Lace “Bettie Page” Vintage Dot w/ Backseam

Secrets in Lace
If you’ve not heard of them before, Secrets in Lace is pretty much the resource for authentic vintage style (otherwise known as retro) stockings. These are the nylons Dita von Teese relies on for all her burlesque shows, photoshoots, and red carpet appearances. While they offer a ton of styles suitable for everyday wear, the fancy stockings shown above are my personal favorites.  All 3 pairs range from size Petite, fitting women who are under 4’11″ and less than 95 pounds, to size Opera, fitting women who are up to 6’2″and 200 pounds. The styles shown above cost (in order from top to bottom) $54.99, $45.99, and $25.99, respectively.

6) Agent Provocateur “Whip Me” Stockings

Agent Provocateur
With a kinky twist on the classic French heel-and-seam stocking, Agent Provocateur’s “Whip Me” nylons are a delightfully naughty union of vintage style and modern flair. Wear them with your highest, most fetishy heels for look that grabs everyone’s attention. These stockings retail for $70, and the size C fits around a size 8/10 US.

7) Cervin “Swing Time” Fully Fashioned Stockings

8) Cervin “Capri” 15-denier Nonstretch RHT Stockings

9) Cervin “Capri” Bicolore Nonstretch RHT Stockings

10) Cervin “Seduction” Bicolore Seamed Stockings

Cervin Stockings via Stockings HQ
I’ll just come right out and say it…I love Cervin. And apparently I’m not the only one since (full disclosure) they make stockings #3-6 on this list too. Not only are the prices incredibly reasonable, these stockings feel and look amazing on the leg. Even better, they’re available in sizes Small (fitting women around 4’10″) to XXX Large (fitting women up to 6’2″). I’ve purchased multiple pairs of what you see here in multiple colors, and never been disappointed. The stockings show above are priced at (in order from top to bottom): $56.88, $11.80, $12.61, and $17.50.

Stockingirl
Stockingirl is another fantastic hosiery resource, especially if you live in the United States, and these lacy Gabriella stockings are perfect for a holiday party or fancy evening out. These stockings are also made of stretch nylon, so they’re less likely to run and you don’t have to worry about them wrinkling around the knees or ankles by the end of the day. Available for $39.99, the Gabriellas fit women up to 5’9″ and 160 lbs.

12) Dollhouse Bettie Black Tulip Lace “Eternity” Stockings

Dollhouse Bettie
The last pair of stockings on this list aren’t especially delicate or fancy when compared to the other nylons we’ve talked about so far, but they are amazing for two other reasons. 1) They’re made in-house at Dollhouse Bettie (the only lingerie store I know of that makes it’s own stockings), and 2) They are incredibly well-made and durable. The Eternity stockings use sheer black mesh instead of traditional nylon, which makes them great for women who want to wear more hosiery, but are worried about tearing or ripping their stockings. These retail for $29 and fit up to a size US 18.

Ask the Addict: Durable Stockings for Work?

Today’s question comes from long-time reader LunarCamel:

Q: Hi! This is totally unrelated to this post (it’s an *awesome* photo shoot indeed). I am going to be working soon (whoo!) and was wondering if you had a recommendation for stockings that are durable (I walk about 3 miles/day). Even some of the pricier pairs are too fine to walk in that much…but if you have a good reasonably priced-recommendation, that’s even better! And by stockings I do mean stockings, I refuse to wear pantyhose. I’d appreciate any help you can offer :)

A: Hi!  For all-day wear, I’d purchase mid-weight (around 15 denier), stretch stockings.  15 denier is sheer enough for work, but durable enough for mild physical activity and the lycra will help your stockings hold their shape and “snap back” after wear.  15 denier stretch stockings are also inexpensive and available everywhere which makes them easy to replace if something unfortunate does happen to your hosiery.

I recommend these Berkshire lacetop stockings from Bare Necessities, these plain top stretch stockings from Victoria’s Secret, or these stretch stockings with decorative welt from Stockingirl.  All three are reasonably priced at $6.95, $8.50, and $21.99, respectively.

I’d also recommend buying a couple of sock liners (HUE makes great ones for only $6) to cushion the parts of your foot that experience the most friction (primarily the ball and the heel). If it’s cold where you live, you can even wear socks over your stockings to help protect them further.

As always, a durable six strap garter belt will go a long way towards keeping your stockings in place all day, reducing the kinds of stress that will eventually result in a run.  Secrets in Lace manufactures several excellent six strap garter belts which are great for all day wear.

I hope this helps, lovely!  Got a question for the addict?  Ask me here or e-mail me at thelingerieaddict@gmail.com! I love talking about lingerie, and if I get enough responses, I’ll turn “Ask the Addict” into a weekly feature.

LunarCamel also had a great stockings-related story she wanted to share:

“So I had an internship interview this afternoon at the Attorney General’s Office. I set off the metal detector going through it. The (not terribly attractive, male) security guard wanded me. The belt on my suit beeped the thingy so I was hoping he’d stop, but he didn’t. I beeped again, lower. “You got something under there?” I looked him dead in the eye and said, “It’s my underwear.” (I’m wearing my daily-use six-strap garter belt, which you *know* has metal clasps cause the plastic ones aren’t worth shit).

Thought you’d enjoy my mild embarassment :) “

Keep those stories coming, folks!  I’m happy to publish them on the blog.  Oh, and the photo above is one of my workday outfits.  Hope you like! :-)

Review: Victoria’s Secret "Glam It Up" Stockings

Let’s see…I’ve talked about the kind of dresses I wear to work, and the kind of shoes I wear to work, but I’ve yet to reveal the sort of pretties I wear while at the office. It’s no secret that I’m fan of luxurious (if often vaguely uncomfortable) lingerie. But I also appreciate a well-made basic, and I find the panties I turn to again and again are On the Inside’s “Forget Me Not” boyshorts.

I own seven different pairs of this panty, in varying patterns and colors, and each one fits like a dream. Handmade out of gorgeous stretch lace, they’re elegant, comfortable, and, with that cheeky cut, undeniably sexy. Plus, at $19/pair, they’re really quite affordable. As a matter of fact, I think it’s time for me restock my panty drawer. Now that I’ve told you everything there is to know about my daily wardrobe, let’s get on with the review.

Today, in celebration of the first ever “Wear Stockings to Work Week,” I decided to wear actual stockings. Yes, I do mean the kind that require garters. Let me tell you, I did not make this decision lightly. It was very important to me that my stockings not only come up very high on the thigh, but also that whatever gartered item I wore with them be so inconspicuous that no one would notice I was wearing stockings instead of tights.

Finally, I settled upon my Lady Marlene garter skirt (reviewed here), and my Victoria’s Secret basic black stockings. I chose the garter skirt for its smooth lines, and the VS stockings for their plainness and stretchiness.

Rarely do I write an unequivocally positive review, but I believe these stockings deserve it. They felt great. They stretched well. They held up all day. And they only cost $8.50/pair (less if you visit RetailMeNot for a coupon code). If you have absolutely have to wear stockings to work, make it these. The Victoria’s Secret stockings are A+ buy all around.

How to Keep Your Thigh High Stockings from Falling Down

Before I begin, I have to tell you I’m blogging from the sky right now. Ain’t technology grand? :-)

Yesterday, I had my last date with Newboy until I return from visiting home next week. I wore one of my favorite pairs of thigh high stockings, the Victoria’s Secret “Sexy Satin Kittens,” which I reviewed here.

Sadly, I had to remove my stocking a few hours into the night because they wouldn’t stay up. However, this “wardrobe malfunction” was no fault of the hosiery; I failed to prepare adequately. So, without further ado, here are my three tips for keeping your stockings high.

1) Wipe the silicone bands inside the welt with a damp cloth after wearing. Cleaning the bands removes sweat, body oils, skin flakes and other assorted detritus that keeps the silicon from adhering to flesh. Even if you regularly wash your stockings after every wear anyway, I’d still recommend paying a little extra attention to the welt.

2) Don’t wear body lotions, oils, or perfumes on your legs if you intend to wear thigh highs. The emollients in your moisturizing products keep the silicone from clinging to your skin. Since I have a custom of slathering on lotion immediately after getting out of the shower, I completely forgot about this last night and wound up paying the price later.

3) If you’ve already applied lotion, or if your stockings simply won’t stay up no matter what, you can try putting a very small amount of talcum powder between the welt and your legs. The powder not only dries your skin, but gives the welt a little something extra to cling to. This is only a short term fix, however, as eventually the powder will wear away, and then you may be left exactly where you started from.

If you have tricks or tips you’d like to share, please feel free to post them in the comments section!

Victoria’s Secret Stockings Sale

Vicky’s is having a pretty spectacular clearance sale right now. I fell out of love with VS’s panties and bras a long time ago, but I still believe they stock some of the best budget hosiery short of buying from Europe.

While my favorites, the satin topped thigh highs are not included, pretty much all of their fishnet hosiery is. Only $9.00 for quality stockings? I’ll bite.

Plus, if you order before July 8, you can get an extra 30% off with the code 30CLR.

Mini-reviews: Wolford, Myla, & What Katie Did

Wolford Individual 10 Stockings–I wore these for an impromptu Wolford Wednesday with hosieryadvocate. My first impression is that these stockings absolutely uphold the Wolford reputation. The Individual 10s are extraordinarily soft and extraordinarily subtle; there are no frills, no lace, no patterns, no design…just nylon pure and simple. To me, that makes these stockings perfect for the business professional who wants to inject a little sensual luxury into their everyday suit. Finally, the Individual 10s are among the most budget friendly of the Wolford brand, retailing for $28.00 at Nancy Meyer or £15.00 at Wolford Boutique London.

What Katie Did Powermesh suspender belt–While this item has since been discontinued (along with the stellar WKD Powermesh knickers), I feel like it’s representative enough of the What Katie Did brand to review here. My first impression of the suspender belt is that it manages to be functional and fun at the same time. The belt was easy to put on, and, perhaps more importantly, easy to adjust. It’s also supremely comfortable. I’ve worn this garter belt for over twelve hours at a time, and my stockings didn’t fall one inch. For those interested, the closet thing I’ve found to it in the current lines is the Cabaret suspender belt which is made from powermesh and organza.

Myla Isadora High Apex Bra–I picked up the Myla Isadora bra while it was on wicked sale at the first of the year. The sheer lace and elegant retro styling appealed to me. Quite simply, this bra fits me perfectly, and I’m sure most of my readers understand that one does not make that statement lightly. I’ve since purchased a second, identical bra. Aside from the fit, the bra looks amazing on, and certainly reflects a modern European aesthetic. Unfortunately, it’s since gone back to it’s regular price, and I cannot recommend spending $125.00 on any bra, no matter how much it makes me swoon.

Budget Find: Foot Traffic Tights at Trashy Diva

My apologies for not posting in awhile. 90 degree heat plus long hours in the musty bowels of the library means I don’t have many opportunities to wear stockings nowadays.

I know. It makes me sad too.

Fortunately, I can still satisfy my yen for hosiery by looking at pictures of stockings and I’ve found a new website which sells lots of really funky styles at even better prices–trashydiva.com.

I stumbled onto their website awhile ago while looking for retro-styled dresses and corsets. How happy I was to discover that they also sell tights. While they do sell the cheap stuff (i.e. Leg Avenue), they also have some spectacular patterns from an unknown brand, like the Nylon Lace Sydney pictured above (which I purchased, of course). Bonus: they’re only $9.00.

I know. It’s awesome.

If these work well, I’ll give some of their other patterns a try, namely the Holland, Paris, and Monte Carlo styles.

As an aside, I want to thank you all for the comments you’ve written here the past few days. You have no idea how much it means to me that someone reads my silly little blog. :-)

The stockings pictured above and others are available here.

Edit: The stockings are made by Foot Traffic. If you’re interested, they have lots more designs on their website.
