Last month, I had the pleasure of another pinup photoshoot with the always amazing Paul O’Connell of POC Photo and The Shanghai Pearl. We work so well together that I’m always excited to share the images and this time is no different. Though we’ve shot together several times before, I think these may be my favorite images to date.

Nylon Stockings Day: 12 of Our Favorite Pairs of Nylon Stockings

Fancy Heeled Vintage Stockings - Image Scan via Slip of a Girl

Today, May 14, is the 73rd anniversary of the nylon stocking, which was first introduced by the DuPont Company at the 1939 World’s Fair. Before nylon, stockings had been made of cotton, wool, rayon, or silk…materials which were either too bulky and warm to wear comfortably year-round or too fine and delicate to wear all day without tearing.

When I first started blogging, it was as Stockings Addict, so hosiery will always hold a special place in my heart. I love how stockings can instantly make any outfit more sophisticated, more stylish, and, yes, more sexy just by their presence. Unfortunately, stockings have been waning in popularity for years now, and you only have to look at the photo at the top of this post to see that stockings today are far less elegant than those of previous decades.

But for those who still enjoy a fancy nylon stocking, all isn’t lost. A few companies, like Cervin, still produce creative, fashion-forward styles, and the machines of today allow for combinations that could only be dreamed of in the 1960′s.

The Parts of a Fully-Fashioned Stocking

If you’re new to stockings, there may be a few terms in this post you don’t recognize, so let’s do a quick review. A Stocking (unlike pantyhose, tights, or thigh highs) requires a garter belt to keep it on the leg. RHT stands for Reinforced Heel and Toe. Fully Fashioned Stockings (like the one shown above) are made in the vintage style, sewn flat and then stitched up the back with a fully-functional backseam and trademark keyhole. Cuban and Havana Heels are squared off at the top, while French Heel stockings come to a point. Fancier styles, like Manhattan Heels, have an outline around the heel and foot. Non-stretch Stockings are more authentic as they’re made of 100% nylon, but have no “give.” Stretch Stockings, made of a nylon/lycra blend, are less authentic but more resistant to tearing.

And a few quick notes when it comes to hosiery care, especially for the stockings listed below. 1) Invest in a pair of hosiery gloves. 2) Purchase a specialty hosiery wash like Hosiery Mate. 3) And always, always, always hand wash and hang to dry.

And now that we’ve covered a few of the basics, let’s move on to the stockings…

1) Kay Marel "New York" Bows

2) Kay Marel "New York" Skyscraper

Kay Marel
No one makes stockings like Kay Marel anymore, and believe me, I’ve looked. These authentic fully-fashioned nylons from the 1950′s are almost a steal at $32.50, and the skyscraper and bow fancy heels look like something straight off the set of Mad Men. Unfortunately, if you’re not petite (that is, if you’re over 5’4″) these stockings aren’t a good fit for you. They simply won’t come up high enough on the leg. To illustrate, I’m 5’8″, and they came to just above the knee on me. Height issues aside though, these are fabulous nylons.

3) Secrets in Lace Diamond Backseam

4) Secrets in Lace "Cabaret" Manhattan Heel

5) Secrets in Lace "Bettie Page" Vintage Dot w/ Backseam

Secrets in Lace
If you’ve not heard of them before, Secrets in Lace is pretty much the resource for authentic vintage style (otherwise known as retro) stockings. These are the nylons Dita von Teese relies on for all her burlesque shows, photoshoots, and red carpet appearances. While they offer a ton of styles suitable for everyday wear, the fancy stockings shown above are my personal favorites.  All 3 pairs range from size Petite, fitting women who are under 4’11″ and less than 95 pounds, to size Opera, fitting women who are up to 6’2″and 200 pounds. The styles shown above cost (in order from top to bottom) $54.99, $45.99, and $25.99, respectively.

6) Agent Provocateur "Whip Me" Stockings

Agent Provocateur
With a kinky twist on the classic French heel-and-seam stocking, Agent Provocateur’s “Whip Me” nylons are a delightfully naughty union of vintage style and modern flair. Wear them with your highest, most fetishy heels for look that grabs everyone’s attention. These stockings retail for $70, and the size C fits around a size 8/10 US.

7) Cervin "Swing Time" Fully Fashioned Stockings

8) Cervin "Capri" 15-denier Nonstretch RHT Stockings

9) Cervin "Capri" Bicolore Nonstretch RHT Stockings

10) Cervin "Seduction" Bicolore Seamed Stockings

Cervin Stockings via Stockings HQ
I’ll just come right out and say it…I love Cervin. And apparently I’m not the only one since (full disclosure) they make stockings #3-6 on this list too. Not only are the prices incredibly reasonable, these stockings feel and look amazing on the leg. Even better, they’re available in sizes Small (fitting women around 4’10″) to XXX Large (fitting women up to 6’2″). I’ve purchased multiple pairs of what you see here in multiple colors, and never been disappointed. The stockings show above are priced at (in order from top to bottom): $56.88, $11.80, $12.61, and $17.50.

11) "Gabriella" Sheer & Lace Embroidered Stockings

Stockingirl
Stockingirl is another fantastic hosiery resource, especially if you live in the United States, and these lacy Gabriella stockings are perfect for a holiday party or fancy evening out. These stockings are also made of stretch nylon, so they’re less likely to run and you don’t have to worry about them wrinkling around the knees or ankles by the end of the day. Available for $39.99, the Gabriellas fit women up to 5’9″ and 160 lbs.

12) Dollhouse Bettie Black Tulip Lace "Eternity" Stockings

Dollhouse Bettie
The last pair of stockings on this list aren’t especially delicate or fancy when compared to the other nylons we’ve talked about so far, but they are amazing for two other reasons. 1) They’re made in-house at Dollhouse Bettie (the only lingerie store I know of that makes it’s own stockings), and 2) They are incredibly well-made and durable. The Eternity stockings use sheer black mesh instead of traditional nylon, which makes them great for women who want to wear more hosiery, but are worried about tearing or ripping their stockings. These retail for $29 and fit up to a size US 18.

How to Dress Like Belle from Secret Diary of a Call Girl

Thanks to several readers’ suggestions on my Twitter and Facebook, I’ve recently finished the 1st and 2nd seasons of the Showtime series Secret Diary of a Call Girl chronicling the lewd and lusty adventures of Belle du Jour.  Just like you all predicted, I fell in the love with series, and most especially with the lingerie.

Most of Belle’s lingerie wardrobe was provided Agent Provocateur, which is understandable since the series is filmed in London, but AP isn’t the only place for callgirl worthy lingerie.  I’ve listed a few equally luxurious choices below.  Most of these are out of the price range of mere mortals, but it’s always nice to dream, right?

Do you have a favorite?  Tell me which one it is in the comments!

Ask the Addict: Tights & Stockings for Summer Time?

Today’s Ask the Addict feature comes courtesy of one of my Twitter followers, @Wilde_Hunt, who designs some of the most amazing leather corsets I’ve ever seen (seriously, go check out her 2009 lookbook and tell me if that leather corset dress isn’t one of the most badass things you’ve ever seen).  A couple of days ago, Larissa asked for my favorite summertime hosiery recommendations, and I was happy to oblige.  Since this might be a question shared by a few more readers, I thought I’d post my selections here as well.

But first, a couple of things to remember about choosing stockings for the hot season.

1) Avoid anything with a control top.  Not only are control tops tights massively uncomfortable, they also don’t allow your skin (including your delicate bits) to breathe.  For women, that’s a special concern since the combination of dark, damp, and dense can lead to yeast infections.

2) Make sure that whatever hosiery you buy has a cotton gusset.  Cotton (unlike nylon) allows air both in and out which is essential to preventing, well, you know.

3) The lower the denier the better.  For people unfamiliar with the word, denier refers to the density of the hosiery fibers, and is given in number form.  The lower the denier, the sheerer the stocking.  For summertime, you want to look for deniers of approximately 15 or below, with single digit deniers being ideal.

Ask the Addict: Bra Shopping after Weight Loss and More!

Today’s “Ask the Addict” feature comes courtesy of Evija, who frequently graces the blog with her insightful and savvy comments.  Evija had several questions for me, and I tried to answer them as best I could.  As always, if you have something to add, please don’t hesitate to do so in the comments.  I love hearing what you all have to say!

Q: Hey Treacle!

I’ve noticed you’ve recently answered quite a bunch of the readers’ questions, so I thought it’s about time I submit mine and see whether you can help me!

1) Almost every lingerie store has bra extenders as their lingerie accessory. But what to do with a band size a bit too big? I’ve lost some weight recently and feel that even though all bras still do the support part rather well, I’d like the band a bit tighter.

2) Maybe you could do a post for all the colour freaks all there and post the lingerie sites that allow you to browse by colour? I encountered this when I made a promise to myself “buy more green lingerie!” and I didn’t found much besides Figleaves. I’m rather fanatic towards jewel colours and nearly hate the pastels, and frankly, it makes life hard!

3) I’m rather tall (nearly 5′ 9″) and with rather massive legs which isn’t too helpful when it comes to finding nylons. So far I have bought only the KMD’s Ophelia, and even though I picked size 5, I had the welt a mere 6 inches above my knee, which isn’t quite the thing I sought for. And I’ve heard the Cervins run even shorter! And StockingsHQ offer only lycra-heavy “extra tall” stockings.

In other news, I think the new Review Wednesday is a rather neat idea, can’t wait to see more!

Best wishes,
Evija

A: Hi Evija!  Thanks for writing.  I’ll answer your questions in the order you’ve given them above.

1) There are a few different ways to handle a too-large band size.  In order of least to most time-consuming, you could try sewing extra hook-and-eye closures onto the band and cutting away the excess.  You could also take the bra to a seamstress or tailor who could professionally take in the band for you.  Or (and this is the option I’m most in favor of) you could just scrap your old bras and start afresh.  I know that’s hard to do, especially when you might have to toss your favorites, but chances are that your weight loss has changed more than just your band size.  I recommend going in for a professional bra fitting, and then treating yourself to a brand new lingerie wardrobe!

2) Unfortunately, when it comes to browsing lingerie by color, the only store I know of that allows that is the same one you already use…Figleaves.  I’m afraid you’ll have to search for jewel tones the old-fashioned way.

3) As a long-legged 5’8″ gal, I empathize with your hosiery plight.  The store that I’ve found has the best stockings selection, in terms of height, weight, color, and style, is Stockingirl.com.  Check them out and tell me what you think!

Got a lingerie question you want answered by an expert?  Just send a note over to thelingerieaddict@gmail.com.  I read every e-mail, and I try to answer them all too!

All That Jazz: Sparkly, Shiny, Seamed Stockings

Today’s guest post comes from a dear blogging friend of mine…the clever and colorful Petra Bellejambes.  Petra is a marketing executive and lingerie enthusiast who thinks often about personal style, beauty and other matters of mutual interest, and blogs about it all from time to time at Voyages En Rose.  I’ve not done nearly enough reviews of late, and fortunately Petra has agreed to fill in for me by talking about Stockingirl’s marvelous, metallic backseam stockings.

I have been traumatized by stay ups that did not (stay up). My one epic, disaster of this nature comes horribly to mind when tempted by stockings, and influences my choice at the start of the day. And while I have a healthy and enduring love for vintage leg wear in general, and stockings in specific, that love affair is cooled off a little by a couple of realities.

Lets start with the garter belt. Most of what we find on local shelves are more designed to relieve boredom in the bedroom than provide comfort on the commute. Flimsy lace and plastic fasteners don’t hold up well to hours of wear. As such, for the normal day, I happily reach for a pair of reliable pantyhose.

But today is not a normal day friends, today is a day of luxury and glamour, embodied on my happy legs by a lovely pair of stockings from legwear legend, Stockingirl. Beneath my skirt and under inspection today are the Shiny Metallic Seamed All Nylon Sandalfoots.

Most of us in Generation L (L for Lycra®) are accustomed to tights and such that cling with the help of elastic tenacity to the unique contours of our legs. You must prepare for a different experience in an all nylon stocking. Their construction make the entire experience of dressing and walking through the day different and special. There is precious little “give” in the fabric. The stitch count gradually climbs from the a tapered ankle, up and over the knee, and all the way to thigh top in the effort to provide a perfect fit for the perfect leg. There is a catch here though, dear friends: you and I do not have perfect legs do we?

Oddly enough, this works. Where you have a little more flesh than the stocking has fiber, an all nylon leg provides a determined embrace, a constant reminder that you have something a little special on. Where there is a little more fabric than flesh, where your unique knee bends, where your unique ankles curl, the subtle, alluring folds and gathers of dark sheers catch the eye nicely, and reward everyone nearby for the extra thought and effort you put into getting dressed this day. A sexy side effect.

Sexy implies dressy too, and these certainly hit a dressy, red carpet note. Available with gold or silver metallic back seams, you can be sure that while you are holding the full attention of the person in front of you, you are winking at the world behind. To me, the seams are a little less glimmery than the pictured on the web site, and this came as a relief. They really don’t shout out, they are noticeable yes, but in a graceful, light catching way. And to the hand, they feel just gorgeous.

Dressy, not trampy, and clearly intended to be deployed for a special night out. By special, ladies, I mean a day where you are going to make the time to do at least 3 things right:

  1. Care for your legs. Please, shave, cream, epilate, deforest, etc in your particular style on the same day. This is a very sheer 15 denier stocking that not only shows flaws, but can catch on stubble. Now, I will pretend politely that we did not have this discussion. Moving on…
  2. Get the garter belt right. Wear a well fitted foundation garment with metal stocking fasteners. Your belt will need to fight to keep the noticeable dark welt of your stockings more or less above your hemline. At least until it suits you to bare a little thigh.
  3. Leave time to dress. These are $30.00 stockings and are designed to last years, but nylon sheers are inherently fragile. Buff your nails, north and south, and luxuriate in the ritual of pulling your stockings up your leg and fixing the seam just so. Half of the likelihood of a ladder comes before you leave the house. The other half at least has the promise of some fun.
A bonus tip for you here now on getting the seams drop dead straight. Standard issue kitchen rubber gloves adhere perfectly to nylon and do a better job of distributing the delicate fabric correctly over your unique contours than your bare hands will.

I suspect that these stockings are of the same quality as practically everything on offer from Stockingirl: first rate. This is a great online shopping experience too. There is over 10 years of experience catering to the real hosiery enthusiast and it shows in the assortment, art direction and detail in the behind the product descriptions. For me, the online chat facility helped sort out a size selection dilemma in the space of a well spent minute. Expert operators are standing by.

These stockings have set a new luxury threshold for me, and I always enjoy a little luxury from time to time. If you feel the same way about luxury, and have a special evening somewhere in your future, Stockingirl might be a good way for you to go. They can help you really brighten up a nice outfit you have already paid for, for much less than the price of a new one.
