New Socks and Stockings from Sock Dreams

Sock Dreams is one of my favorite legwear shops. Not only do they carry some of the most fabulous socks and stockings known to humankind, they always offer free US shipping. If you haven’t yet visited the online version of this Portland, OR boutique, take a look at what you’re missing…

Kawaii Skeleton Over-the-Knee Socks
Who needs a Halloween costume when you’re wearing these, and they’re a scream, I mean a steal, at only $12.00!

Fern Lace Thigh High Stockings
I love the delicate lace of these stockings. Very European chic, and quite reasonable at $20.00

Cherry Blossom Knee Highs Socks
Cute and kitschy, these socks are a delight. And at only $7, they’re an affordable indulgence too.

Everyday Hosiery: Wear to Work Nylon

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love my new job. And one of the many, many things that makes it better than my old job is the fact that I can wear tights to work. I’ve already talked about some of my favorite stockings in the article “Nude Hosiery for Women of Color,” but now that it’s starting to get a bit chilly outside, I’ll need to exchange my dresses for pants and my pantyhose for knee highs. Like the rest of you though, I’m operating on a much smaller lingerie budget than usual, so why don’t we look at fab knee-high finds for $10 or less?

I’ve been using a lot of words to sing the praises of We Love Colors and Sock Dreams lately, and there’s a reason for that. They have good stuff at good prices. Both We Love Colors and Sock Dreams stock a plethora of work-friendly knee highs at prices ranging from $3.50 to $8.00 a pair. That’s right; you can buy an entire week’s worth of knee-highs socks from either of these fine companies and still have enough left over for a nice dinner.

If you’d rather go with basic sheers, Nordstrom’s has several very reasonable options. Those of you who spend a lot of time on your feet might like the Cushioned Sole Light Support Knee Highs while my Spanx fans (I know you’re out there!) may want to give their 2/$14 trouser socks a try. In addition, Bare Necessities sells opaque knee-high socks from the ever popular budget brand, Hue, for only $6/pair or 3/$15.

Finally, you all know that no discussion of hosiery is complete without talking about the European brands. MyTights stocks a couple of excellent selections from Aristoc and Transparenze at $8.95 and $9.95/pair, respectively. Either of these would be perfect for adding a bit of sass to your workday wardrobe.

If you have a go-to brand for your work hosiery needs, why don’t you tell us about in the comments section? As always, Happy Shopping!

Ask the Addict: Where to Buy Striped Stockings?

Every once in awhile, people stop by my blog or Twitter to ask me questions about hosiery. Of all the things I do on the blog, helping people find the right lingerie is one of my favorites. This particular question is taken from my Twitter, where an acquaintance of mine asked where she could find vertically striped tights. In the interests of conveying the “real-time” flavor of the conversation, I’ll cut and paste our Tweets directly.

@StockingsAddict–oy! name me a good pair of vertical stripe stockings that will not fall apart after one night!

@StockingsFangirl–You want fishnets, opaques, or sheers? Real stockings (garters required), stay-ups, or tights? I need details! ;-)

@StockingsAddict–garters, vertical black stripes, not fishnets maybe half opaque half sheer or all opaque.

@StockingsAddict–garters meaning real stockings.

@StockingsFanGirl–I’d definitely start with these people: www.sockdreams.com Good selection, good quality, good prices, good customer service.

@StockingsFanGirl–Just saw your most recent tweets. I still recommend Sock Dreams; they have a vertical stripes section.

@StockingsFanGirl–Dollhouse Bettie has striped stockings. I haven’ t tried Belle Epoque but they’re only $8.95.

@StockingsFanGirl–We Love Colors also has opaque vertically striped stockings in fifty colors.

I haven’t yet heard back from StockingsFanGirl, so I don’t know what pair she decided on. But if any of you ever have a stockings-related question, please don’t hesitate to either post it in the comments section of any entry, message me via Twitter, or even write to me at my e-mail address candykane29@google.com.

Happy Pride!!!

I’m just getting back from my very first Seattle Pride Festival, and I’m so stoked! It makes me feel incredible when thousands of people get together to peacefully celebrate love, life, and happiness. The parade was pretty long, at about 2.5 hours, but the energy was high the entire time. I believe I’m still a little glowy. :-)

If you want to get your pride on, why not take a look at the “Rainbow” section over on Sock Dreams? I think I may invest in some rainbow striped over-the-knee socks for next year’s parade.

the look for less: music legs vs. falke

Well, I was going to write an introduction for my upcoming event, Fishnet Stockings week, but I’ve found something better to talk about instead. As you can tell from the title, this entry is the fourth in a series. In all of my previous “Look for less” posts, I’ve had to settle for finding a similar item, something which carried the same theme even if it wasn’t expressed in the same way. This time, however, I’ve found a budget item with the exact same pattern as the luxury one…

Now I won’t insult your intelligence by asking you to identify which is the more expensive pair of tights; Falke’s advertising campaigns are much too obvious for that. However, I am downright flabbergasted at how the Music Legs Zurich tights on the left look exactly the same as the more expensive Falke Renaissance tights on the right.

Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately), because the Falke Renaissance tights are on sale, the price disparity isn’t so great as it once was. All the same, this post reminds me that Falke, Wolford, La Perla and the other high end names are not the be all, end all of fashion. There are great deals to be had, if you’re just willing to look.
