‘Nude’ Hosiery for Darker Skin Tones: Brands Worth Trying

Way back in 2009, I wrote my first article on this topic – Nude Hosiery for Women of Color. It’s one of the first pieces where I discussed both my ethnic identity and how it related to my experience of lingerie (i.e. most ‘nude’ hosiery…isn’t). It’s also one of the most well-received articles we’ve ever published on the blog.

I was writing under the name ‘Stockings Addict’ at the time and though I don’t focus exclusively on hosiery anymore, I’m still pretty passionate about my legwear. Lately, as the weather’s grown colder, I’ve gotten a lot of inquiries about nude tights for darker complexions. So I think it’s time to update the info on the blog with a few brands I’ve personally tried lately. Hosiery is one of those things that should complement your outfit…helping you feel more confident, not less confident. And if you’re in a job which requires you to wear hosiery everyday, I don’t think you should have to worry and stress and fret about them at all.

I like keep these three things in mind when I’m shopping for hosiery: durability, price, quality. A good rule of thumb is to pick of 2 of those 3 to guide your purchasing decisions. Durability is how long and how often you can wear a pair of tights before they run, snag or tear. Sometimes that’s once. Sometimes that’s dozens of times. Lower priced legwear tends to get destroyed faster than higher priced legwear. The price category is pretty self-explanatory. If spending $10 or less on hosiery is important to you, you’ll have a very different range of selection than someone who’s okay with spend $40 or $50 on hosiery.

Quality is somewhat more vague category. A lot of people equate quality to durability, but those two things aren’t the same in my mind. Quality, to me, has more to do with how the hosiery feels on the leg. How soft is it? How comfortable is it? Does it bind, constrict, or hinder you in anyway you in any way? Are your tights falling down by the end of the workday? Are they completely stretched out of shape? Did they make you itch? That sort of thing. So…a bit more vague than the other two, but still super important.

When it comes to nude legwear, one of the hardest things about shopping for it if you have darker skin (aside from finding a place that sells it, of course) is figuring out which shade matches your complexion. There tend to be a lot more tones available for women with lighter complexions, but often there’s only kind of muddy dark brown if you have a dark complexion…which is pretty annoying (Also annoying? When a sales clerk insists that beige matches all skin tones). With the exception of Frangi Pangi, none of the tights below are sold in the United States…and that’s unfortunate.

Marissa Sandalfoot Stockings

While the primary focus of this piece is on tights and pantyhose, I also want to share a few stockings (quick note: stockings require a garter belt) I’ve found that are a good fit for darker skintones. I’ve personally owned, worn, and loved What Katie Did’s fully fashioned stockings in coffee, Cervin’s Havana stockings in Chocolate (though the Lyon color works well too if you’re light to medium brown), and Stockingirl’s Marissa Sandalfoot in South Pacific. If you’re into pinup or burlesque, these are all great choices.

Finally, there are also a few tights and pantyhose brands I didn’t try in this review like Debenhams, Nude Barre, Levante, and Oroblu. I do hope to revisit this topic in the future though and cover a few more of those brands. Now, with all that said, on to the reviews:

Pendeza
I ordered the Pendeza Tone 20 tights, size Large, from StockingsHQ, which I’d describe as brown with reddish undertones. This is a new brand and, like several other names on this list, only available overseas. Pendeza is an inexpensive brand at only $8.10/pair but you’ll have to be comfortable with ordering online (and probably in bulk) to take advantage of the price. One last note, I love that this brand has 5 tones darker complexions.

I found these tights to be extremely comfortable, and the 15 denier knit made it look like I was wearing nothing at all on my legs. The durability is great; they’re stretchy and snappy and I had no snags or tears at the end of the day. They’re also not a all constricting. There is no control top, which I like, but some of you may not and they have a reinforced toe. Point blank, I loved these. They’re a great price, a great fit, and a great color.

Frangi Pangi -
Frangi Pangi sent me two pairs of tights free of charge for review purposes. I’m reviewing the Carmella color for this blog post, size Large. As the name suggest, I’d describe Carmella as a deep caramel shade with yellow/golden undertones. These pantyhose retail for $17.50, and there are 11 skintones available. They’re also made in the USA.

Perhaps I’m a bit spoiled, but I was expecting a better fit and feel for mid-range price point here. Instead, they more or less fit like tights I’d get from a Target or Walgreens (and I’m not knocking Target or Walgreens; I just have different expectations when I shop there). The quality of the nylon wasn’t very high and they didn’t feel very comfortable on the leg. They also come with a control top, which isn’t my most favorite thing. Don’t get me wrong…they fit just fine, and they weren’t bad. But they weren’t very memorable either. On the other hand, you don’t have to pay international shipping to get these, so there’s that.

Pretty Polly
When it comes to hosiery brands, Pretty Polly is an an old favorite of mine. They were featured in my first article on this subject, and I buy their fashion tights pretty regularly. And while Pretty Polly is  more popular stateside, I haven’t run across any department stores carrying their tights in shades darker than sunblush. I purchased the Nutmeg color in size Large from StockingsHQ for $7.15. Quick note: If you like Pretty Polly or want to try them, you’re going to want to order them from a UK retailer like StockingsHQ. They cost at least twice as much if you order stateside, and it’s the exact same product.

At 10 denier, these tights were the sheerest I tried. They’re also very shiny (I’d even call the finish glossy or oily) and very stretchy. Unfortunately, they’re not very durable; these were the easiest tights to tear of all the ones I’ve tried. You can go easily destroy a pair after just one wear. The nylon is very soft and comfortable, and these come with an opaque panty top (not a control top) and a reinforced toe. Based on my experience with the nutmeg, which was lighter than I thought it would be, you may want to order one shade darker than what you think you need. I’d probably try the Sensation or Tivoili next time.

Gerbe Ethnic Colors Tights
Gerbe Ethnic Colours made the news when they come out with their skintone tights in a range of shades. Sadly, I haven’t heard much about them since. I purchased the Cappuccino pantyhose in size 4 (Large) while visiting Paris this past January (not to confused with Opera, which is a darker brown tone). They appear to only be available online from the store linked above, but I’ve never purchased from that store, so buy at your own risk. While Gerbe Ethnic Colours is stocked stateside by a few retailers, they all appear to only carry the lightest colors…like ecru (ivory).  In addition, most stores only carry the stockings instead of the tights.

At between $25-$30/pair, these were the most expensive of the bunch. However, they are also the most luxurious…by far. The 15 denier leg appears even more sheer when it’s one (my fiance thought I wasn’t wearing pantyhose at all, which is the ultimate compliment) and they have a matte appearance. It’s a very subtle effect (your legs glow instead of shine), but one well-suited to the professional world, I think. The nylon is very fine and very soft (almost like what you’d find on a fully-fashioned stocking), and I completely forgot I was wearing them as I went on about my day. There is no control top but the waistband is somewhat uncomfortable. These were my favorite and a great skintone match, but the price point and difficulty in finding a retailer are definite negatives for this brand.

Fellow addicts, what are your go-brands for nude tights? Any suggestions for women who have trouble finding a skintone match where they live? Let’s share our resources in the comments!

5 Perfect (Stocking) Stocking Stuffers

I know.  Stockings INSIDE of stockings?  Your head may have just exploded.  But piece it back together and consider how happy any lingerie addict would be to wake up on Christmas day and instead of finding in her Christmas stocking a deck of cards, chap stick, Hershey’s bar or lump of coal, she pulls out a gorgeous pair of stockings!

First, a little about the tradition of Christmas stockings.  Considered ahistorically, it does seem a bit odd to hang things that normally contain feet, in expectation of receiving gifts in them.   There doesn’t seem to be a definitive written history of the tradition, but I’ve come across a few legends that do a bit of explaining.

In one, a fourth century European nobleman is reduced to penury after years of crop failures and famine on his property.  While he had begun his promising adulthood handsome, wealthy, and in love, he now must support the peasants nearby as well as his family.  When he suddenly finds himself a widower and sole guardian of his three beautiful daughters he is distraught not only over his wife’s death, but because he does not have enough money to pay for his daughters’ marriages.

He is a good man, and sympathetic words spread about his plight.  An unknown traveler named Nicholas hears and in the quiet of night comes to the man’s house in order to make a gift of gold coins to the man and his daughters.  When looking for a secure place to leave the gold, he sees the daughters’ stockings hanging on the mantel to dry, and fills them each with gold.

An early mention, possibly the first, of Christmas stockings being hung near a chimney was by the poet Clement Clarke Moore in the poem “T’was the Night Before Christmas.”

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there”

Around the same time, Santa Claus made his debut as a fully realized character in satirist  Thomas Nast‘s illustrations for “Harpers” in the mid 19th century.

Now that stocking gifting traditions have evolved from gold coins to fruits and nuts to more personal goodies, I’ve collected a few of my favorite combinations of Christmas stockings (the hang-by-the-chimney type) along with their hosiery-stocking counterparts to share with you.  So whether you’re playing Santa this year and need some stocking stuffer ideas or you’re collecting items for your own wish list or you’re a bystander in this Christmas affair and are simply a fan of hosiery, here are goodies for 5 tastes: Classic, Cute and Cozy, Pin up, Playful, and Burlesque.

Classic:

The Classic Christmas stocking, $17.50

Ah, the classic red stocking.  Always a winner.  Here’s an equally reliable winner in the hosiery department.  I like how the red bows are festive and fun but not overstated.

Ooh La La Cherie stocking from MadamGirl, $13.50

Cute and Cozy:

Gingerbread girl personalized stocking, $29.95

This is so charming and cute, it deserves a similarly adorable stuffer inside.  These tights are cozy and bring a fun spirit to winter while not being too juvenile.

Snowflake leggings, $16.99

Pinup:

Pinup Girl Christmas Stocking, Etsy, $50

So this may not be the right choice for every household, but its tongue-in-cheek sauciness is irresistible to me.  This pin up stocking deserves fishnets.

Jonathan Aston fishnet hold ups, Mytights, $12.95

Playful:

Etsy striped stocking, $200 for 4

These handmade modern interpretations of the traditional stocking are so bright and pretty I would want leave them up all year around.  Fun striped socks are also good for year round romps.

Striped Socks, SockWizard, $9.99

Burlesque:

Burlesque Christmas stocking, Etsy, $40

The grand finale!  This comic-sexy leg Christmas stocking is ingenious.  In homage to its clever creator, I would fill it with a lacy, delicate patterned stocking.  I love this one from a favorite brand, Wolford, because its lace-lookalike patterning is actually peacock feathers, which is a little unexpected and very cool.

Wolford Paradise Peacock tights, Bare Necessities, $42.99

Laura a.k.a. Lola Haze

I’ve loved lingerie since before that was reasonable. I taught myself drawing, designing, and sewing, and after graduating from Harvard with an English degree, immediately went to work disregarding it and following my passion for fashion. After a few years designing for a big company, I went off on my own and started Lola Haze TM, (named after the title character in “Lolita,” my favorite book). Lola Haze is playwear for the bold woman who loves fun and dresses for herself! I feel happy and lucky that I get to love my job so much, and am thrilled to share my lingerie enthusiasm with The Lingerie Addict!

Giving Thanks: Ode to My Most Important Lingerie

What a trying couple of weeks it has been for the great city of New York and its fellow east coast neighbors! The stress that we’ve endured due to Hurricane Sandy has really set us back as we have suffered darkness, flooding & isolation due to her wrath. But we are resilient and will continue to keep moving forward, supporting one another, until we are fully recovered from this disaster.

The outpouring of support that I have witnessed since Sandy hit has been both inspiring and humbling. I am truly touched by those who have selflessly opened their hearts & homes to all of those affected by the storm. My loses were minor in comparison to others whose lives have been forever changed by this catastrophe and while I remain thankful for everyone & everything in my life, my heart goes out to those who were not quite as fortunate.

In the midst of this ordeal and with the upcoming American holiday of Thanksgiving approaching, I could not think of a more appropriate time to sit back and reflect on all the favorable blessings in my life. Aside from the love & fortune that surround me, I am also very grateful for so many of my tangible possessions. My addiction to lingerie is a luxury that I am fortunate enough to be able to indulge in from time to time and many of my pieces play an integral role in my comfort & happiness.

While they may not all be considered necessities, I am still thankful that I own those key pieces that make life that more pleasant. That is why I would like to dedicate this article, not only to the people that I am most thankful for, but also to my undergarments for which I have developed a great appreciation.

Below is an ode the 8 lingerie pieces that I am most grateful for.

1) To My Supportive Sports Bra

Lily of France In Action Cotton Blend Underwire bra, you are my most worn bra ever! I rely on your support during every workout and wouldn’t be able to succeed without you. Your underwire cups make me feel secure and help minimize bounce through the most rigorous of cardio. I also love your padded straps & comfy fabric that doesn’t leave me as sticky & sweaty as some other sport bras of the past. Thank you for living up to your reputation & I look forward to many more workouts together!

2) To My Slimming Shapewear

Spanx Slim Cogneto Shape Slip, I can always count on you to support me in my time of need! And as the bountiful holidays begin I take comfort in the fact that you will be there waiting for me to offer your support once more if I should need.

3) To My Long Underwear:

Winter Silks mid-weight silk long underwear top & pant, you have stuck by me winter after winter, offering your full-bodied warmth with just a fraction of the bulk. I layer you under clothes in the harshest of weather with the comforting knowledge that you will sustain my body temperature and keep me cozy for the entirety of the day. Your lightweight filaments make you thin enough to be undetectable under my tightest, most form fitting fashions and therefore I am happy to pledge my loyalty to you for all future winters!

4) To My No-Lines Underwear

Bali One Smooth U No Lines Bikini, knowing that you have me covered under a white pencil skirt or linen palazzos helps me to go about my day feeling care-free & confident. Your elastic-free leg openings eliminate VPL and your clear silicone grips ensure that you stay put. Not to mention your pretty lace waistband & fun color assortment that keeps me feeling feminine & fashionable day after day. Thank you for keeping me stylish, smooth & wedgie-free!

Your simple, full coverage styling offers me comfort during times of bloating, fatigue & irritability. I know that you will secure me in comfortable cotton & a no-fuss waistband leaving me free to focus on the more pressing matters of the day. Though I may not say it often enough, you are still an integral part of my wardrobe and I am grateful to have you in my life.

6) To My Cozy Bathrobe

Gap Body Fleece Sherpa Lined Robe, we have spent a lot of time together this season already. With the plunging temperatures and lack of power last week you’ve really got my back. I anticipate many more seasons together as you have proven yourself an asset against the cold northeastern winters and I am thankful for your comfort.

You are their best friend and we are both are so grateful for all your hard work.

While these undergarments serve multiple purposes both from a functional and a fashionable standpoint, I realize how fortunate I am to own them. Nylon Stockings Day: 12 of Our Favorite Pairs of Nylon Stockings

Fancy Heeled Vintage Stockings - Image Scan via Slip of a Girl

Today, May 14, is the 73rd anniversary of the nylon stocking, which was first introduced by the DuPont Company at the 1939 World’s Fair. Before nylon, stockings had been made of cotton, wool, rayon, or silk…materials which were either too bulky and warm to wear comfortably year-round or too fine and delicate to wear all day without tearing.

When I first started blogging, it was as Stockings Addict, so hosiery will always hold a special place in my heart. I love how stockings can instantly make any outfit more sophisticated, more stylish, and, yes, more sexy just by their presence. Unfortunately, stockings have been waning in popularity for years now, and you only have to look at the photo at the top of this post to see that stockings today are far less elegant than those of previous decades.

But for those who still enjoy a fancy nylon stocking, all isn’t lost. A few companies, like Cervin, still produce creative, fashion-forward styles, and the machines of today allow for combinations that could only be dreamed of in the 1960′s.

The Parts of a Fully-Fashioned Stocking

If you’re new to stockings, there may be a few terms in this post you don’t recognize, so let’s do a quick review. A Stocking (unlike pantyhose, tights, or thigh highs) requires a garter belt to keep it on the leg. RHT stands for Reinforced Heel and Toe. Fully Fashioned Stockings (like the one shown above) are made in the vintage style, sewn flat and then stitched up the back with a fully-functional backseam and trademark keyhole. Cuban and Havana Heels are squared off at the top, while French Heel stockings come to a point. Fancier styles, like Manhattan Heels, have an outline around the heel and foot. Non-stretch Stockings are more authentic as they’re made of 100% nylon, but have no “give.” Stretch Stockings, made of a nylon/lycra blend, are less authentic but more resistant to tearing.

And a few quick notes when it comes to hosiery care, especially for the stockings listed below. 1) Invest in a pair of hosiery gloves. 2) Purchase a specialty hosiery wash like Hosiery Mate. 3) And always, always, always hand wash and hang to dry.

And now that we’ve covered a few of the basics, let’s move on to the stockings…

1) Kay Marel "New York" Bows

2) Kay Marel "New York" Skyscraper

Kay Marel
No one makes stockings like Kay Marel anymore, and believe me, I’ve looked. These authentic fully-fashioned nylons from the 1950′s are almost a steal at $32.50, and the skyscraper and bow fancy heels look like something straight off the set of Mad Men. Unfortunately, if you’re not petite (that is, if you’re over 5’4″) these stockings aren’t a good fit for you. They simply won’t come up high enough on the leg. To illustrate, I’m 5’8″, and they came to just above the knee on me. Height issues aside though, these are fabulous nylons.

3) Secrets in Lace Diamond Backseam

4) Secrets in Lace "Cabaret" Manhattan Heel

5) Secrets in Lace "Bettie Page" Vintage Dot w/ Backseam

Secrets in Lace
If you’ve not heard of them before, Secrets in Lace is pretty much the resource for authentic vintage style (otherwise known as retro) stockings. These are the nylons Dita von Teese relies on for all her burlesque shows, photoshoots, and red carpet appearances. While they offer a ton of styles suitable for everyday wear, the fancy stockings shown above are my personal favorites.  All 3 pairs range from size Petite, fitting women who are under 4’11″ and less than 95 pounds, to size Opera, fitting women who are up to 6’2″and 200 pounds. The styles shown above cost (in order from top to bottom) $54.99, $45.99, and $25.99, respectively.

6) Agent Provocateur "Whip Me" Stockings

Agent Provocateur
With a kinky twist on the classic French heel-and-seam stocking, Agent Provocateur’s “Whip Me” nylons are a delightfully naughty union of vintage style and modern flair. Wear them with your highest, most fetishy heels for look that grabs everyone’s attention. These stockings retail for $70, and the size C fits around a size 8/10 US.

7) Cervin "Swing Time" Fully Fashioned Stockings

8) Cervin "Capri" 15-denier Nonstretch RHT Stockings

9) Cervin "Capri" Bicolore Nonstretch RHT Stockings

10) Cervin "Seduction" Bicolore Seamed Stockings

Cervin Stockings via Stockings HQ
I’ll just come right out and say it…I love Cervin. And apparently I’m not the only one since (full disclosure) they make stockings #3-6 on this list too. Not only are the prices incredibly reasonable, these stockings feel and look amazing on the leg. Even better, they’re available in sizes Small (fitting women around 4’10″) to XXX Large (fitting women up to 6’2″). I’ve purchased multiple pairs of what you see here in multiple colors, and never been disappointed. The stockings show above are priced at (in order from top to bottom): $56.88, $11.80, $12.61, and $17.50.

11) "Gabriella" Sheer & Lace Embroidered Stockings

Stockingirl
Stockingirl is another fantastic hosiery resource, especially if you live in the United States, and these lacy Gabriella stockings are perfect for a holiday party or fancy evening out. These stockings are also made of stretch nylon, so they’re less likely to run and you don’t have to worry about them wrinkling around the knees or ankles by the end of the day. Available for $39.99, the Gabriellas fit women up to 5’9″ and 160 lbs.

12) Dollhouse Bettie Black Tulip Lace "Eternity" Stockings

Dollhouse Bettie
The last pair of stockings on this list aren’t especially delicate or fancy when compared to the other nylons we’ve talked about so far, but they are amazing for two other reasons. 1) They’re made in-house at Dollhouse Bettie (the only lingerie store I know of that makes it’s own stockings), and 2) They are incredibly well-made and durable. The Eternity stockings use sheer black mesh instead of traditional nylon, which makes them great for women who want to wear more hosiery, but are worried about tearing or ripping their stockings. These retail for $29 and fit up to a size US 18.

Ask the Addict: Tights & Stockings for Summer Time?

Today’s Ask the Addict feature comes courtesy of one of my Twitter followers, @Wilde_Hunt, who designs some of the most amazing leather corsets I’ve ever seen (seriously, go check out her 2009 lookbook and tell me if that leather corset dress isn’t one of the most badass things you’ve ever seen).  A couple of days ago, Larissa asked for my favorite summertime hosiery recommendations, and I was happy to oblige.  Since this might be a question shared by a few more readers, I thought I’d post my selections here as well.

But first, a couple of things to remember about choosing stockings for the hot season.

1) Avoid anything with a control top.  Not only are control tops tights massively uncomfortable, they also don’t allow your skin (including your delicate bits) to breathe.  For women, that’s a special concern since the combination of dark, damp, and dense can lead to yeast infections.

2) Make sure that whatever hosiery you buy has a cotton gusset.  Cotton (unlike nylon) allows air both in and out which is essential to preventing, well, you know.

3) The lower the denier the better.  For people unfamiliar with the word, denier refers to the density of the hosiery fibers, and is given in number form.  The lower the denier, the sheerer the stocking.  For summertime, you want to look for deniers of approximately 15 or below, with single digit deniers being ideal.
