5 Perfect (Stocking) Stocking Stuffers

I know.  Stockings INSIDE of stockings?  Your head may have just exploded.  But piece it back together and consider how happy any lingerie addict would be to wake up on Christmas day and instead of finding in her Christmas stocking a deck of cards, chap stick, Hershey’s bar or lump of coal, she pulls out a gorgeous pair of stockings!

First, a little about the tradition of Christmas stockings.  Considered ahistorically, it does seem a bit odd to hang things that normally contain feet, in expectation of receiving gifts in them.   There doesn’t seem to be a definitive written history of the tradition, but I’ve come across a few legends that do a bit of explaining.

In one, a fourth century European nobleman is reduced to penury after years of crop failures and famine on his property.  While he had begun his promising adulthood handsome, wealthy, and in love, he now must support the peasants nearby as well as his family.  When he suddenly finds himself a widower and sole guardian of his three beautiful daughters he is distraught not only over his wife’s death, but because he does not have enough money to pay for his daughters’ marriages.

He is a good man, and sympathetic words spread about his plight.  An unknown traveler named Nicholas hears and in the quiet of night comes to the man’s house in order to make a gift of gold coins to the man and his daughters.  When looking for a secure place to leave the gold, he sees the daughters’ stockings hanging on the mantel to dry, and fills them each with gold.

An early mention, possibly the first, of Christmas stockings being hung near a chimney was by the poet Clement Clarke Moore in the poem “T’was the Night Before Christmas.”

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there”

Around the same time, Santa Claus made his debut as a fully realized character in satirist  Thomas Nast‘s illustrations for “Harpers” in the mid 19th century.

Now that stocking gifting traditions have evolved from gold coins to fruits and nuts to more personal goodies, I’ve collected a few of my favorite combinations of Christmas stockings (the hang-by-the-chimney type) along with their hosiery-stocking counterparts to share with you.  So whether you’re playing Santa this year and need some stocking stuffer ideas or you’re collecting items for your own wish list or you’re a bystander in this Christmas affair and are simply a fan of hosiery, here are goodies for 5 tastes: Classic, Cute and Cozy, Pin up, Playful, and Burlesque.

Classic:

The Classic Christmas stocking, $17.50

Ah, the classic red stocking.  Always a winner.  Here’s an equally reliable winner in the hosiery department.  I like how the red bows are festive and fun but not overstated.

Ooh La La Cherie stocking from MadamGirl, $13.50

Cute and Cozy:

Gingerbread girl personalized stocking, $29.95

This is so charming and cute, it deserves a similarly adorable stuffer inside.  These tights are cozy and bring a fun spirit to winter while not being too juvenile.

Snowflake leggings, $16.99

Pinup:

Pinup Girl Christmas Stocking, Etsy, $50

So this may not be the right choice for every household, but its tongue-in-cheek sauciness is irresistible to me.  This pin up stocking deserves fishnets.

Jonathan Aston fishnet hold ups, Mytights, $12.95

Playful:

Etsy striped stocking, $200 for 4

These handmade modern interpretations of the traditional stocking are so bright and pretty I would want leave them up all year around.  Fun striped socks are also good for year round romps.

Striped Socks, SockWizard, $9.99

Burlesque:

Burlesque Christmas stocking, Etsy, $40

The grand finale!  This comic-sexy leg Christmas stocking is ingenious.  In homage to its clever creator, I would fill it with a lacy, delicate patterned stocking.  I love this one from a favorite brand, Wolford, because its lace-lookalike patterning is actually peacock feathers, which is a little unexpected and very cool.

Wolford Paradise Peacock tights, Bare Necessities, $42.99

Laura a.k.a. Lola Haze

I’ve loved lingerie since before that was reasonable. I taught myself drawing, designing, and sewing, and after graduating from Harvard with an English degree, immediately went to work disregarding it and following my passion for fashion. After a few years designing for a big company, I went off on my own and started Lola Haze TM, (named after the title character in “Lolita,” my favorite book). Lola Haze is playwear for the bold woman who loves fun and dresses for herself! I feel happy and lucky that I get to love my job so much, and am thrilled to share my lingerie enthusiasm with The Lingerie Addict!

Stock Up for Winter with the MyTights Sale

I’m about to pass out from all the CurveNY and BlogHer craziness, but before I get ready to leave NYC, I wanted you let you know about the MyTights Summer Sale.

MyTights, just as the name says, specializes in selling legwear, especially from brands that are hard to access in the States (like Falke, Pretty Polly, and Bebaroque).  When it comes to trendy or patterned hosiery, My Tights is one of the first place I stop.  I bought the Henry Holland for Pretty Polly Super Suspenders (as seen on UK celeb Pixie Geldof) from them just a few days ago.

Things tend to dissapear pretty quickly at these sales, so I recommend checking it out ASAP.  I’ve posted one of my favorite looks, the Henry Holland for Pretty Polly lace leggings, to the left.  As always, I’d love to hear what you think of the sale and if you buy anything.  For now, though, I’m off to finish packing

Ask the Addict: Tights & Stockings for Summer Time?

Today’s Ask the Addict feature comes courtesy of one of my Twitter followers, @Wilde_Hunt, who designs some of the most amazing leather corsets I’ve ever seen (seriously, go check out her 2009 lookbook and tell me if that leather corset dress isn’t one of the most badass things you’ve ever seen).  A couple of days ago, Larissa asked for my favorite summertime hosiery recommendations, and I was happy to oblige.  Since this might be a question shared by a few more readers, I thought I’d post my selections here as well.

But first, a couple of things to remember about choosing stockings for the hot season.

1) Avoid anything with a control top.  Not only are control tops tights massively uncomfortable, they also don’t allow your skin (including your delicate bits) to breathe.  For women, that’s a special concern since the combination of dark, damp, and dense can lead to yeast infections.

2) Make sure that whatever hosiery you buy has a cotton gusset.  Cotton (unlike nylon) allows air both in and out which is essential to preventing, well, you know.

3) The lower the denier the better.  For people unfamiliar with the word, denier refers to the density of the hosiery fibers, and is given in number form.  The lower the denier, the sheerer the stocking.  For summertime, you want to look for deniers of approximately 15 or below, with single digit deniers being ideal.

Holiday Lingerie Shopping Guide: 13 Fashionable Winter Tights

When I woke up this morning, it was was 13°F. In “Ye Olde College Days,” I’d probably have rolled over, burrowed under the covers, and gone back to sleep, grumbling that it was way too cold to be outside.

Alas, I am an honest-to-goodness grownup now and the bills must get paid. To celebrate the day I realized my childhood was gone forever, I’m listing 13 fabulous winter tights…one for every degree Fahrenheit.

I’m forever on the lookout for new legwear, so if you have any tights recommendations, please let me know!

Silky Sensation Fishnet Tights
$2.77
The cheapest fishnet tights I’ve seen anywhere and available in 10 colors to boot! Definitely worth stocking up on, especially as a layering piece.
We Love Colors Opaque MicroFiber Tights
$12.50
Another great basic, I reviewed these tights here and still think they’re wonderful. With 51 colors to choose from, you’re sure to find something for every outfit.

Asos Heart Sheer Tights
$13.60
I’m a big fan of this season’s polka dot trend, and I love Asos’ cute and chic take on it. The subtle design adds something special to any outfit.
Urban Outfitters Large Scale Floral Tights $14.00
Flowers are another huge legwear trend for this season. These tights remind me of a much more expensive pair by Wolford a year or two back.

Free People Tiny Dots Sheer Tight
$14.00
I love these. The dots are noticeable without being overpowering. Plus, the price is just right.

Henry Holland by Pretty Polly Alphabet Tights
$14.08
It was hard to choose just one look from Henry Holland’s uber-popular capsule tights collection, but I picked these because I think they’d work with everything. So cheeky!
Jonathan Aston Rose Glass Lace Opaque Tights
$14.86
Jonathan Aston is my go-to brand for fashionable hosiery on a budget. They take the best looks from Wolford and replicate them for the masses.

Free People Santa Lima Tights
$18.00
My second selection from Free People, I really dig the boho/hippie/farmgirl vibe of these tights, plus they look super-warm to boot!

Cette Spirano Spiral Pantyhose
$27.00
After drooling over these tights for several months, I think it’s time to buckle down and buy them. I bet the spiral pattern is very slimming.

Look from London Peacock Feather Tights
$29.99
One of the best purchases I’ve made this year, hands down, I wear these tights all the time and everyone I encounter absolutely raves about them.

SiSi Liquirizia Seamed Knee High Tights
$37.50
If I learned anything while backpacking in Europe, it’s that continental ladies love their legwear. I’m happy to see Dollhouse Bettie is bring some of that style over here.

Wolford Lorraine Diamond Tights
$43.96
How can I talk about tights without talking about Wolford? If I’m not mistaken, this is the first Winter they’ve debuted a mid-season collection, and it’s even better than the first one.

Bebaroque Pearl Tights
$81.33
Bebaroque is a really fantastic under-the-radar legwear designer. Everything they do is completely handmade and limited edition. These tights look something a Flapper would have worn in the 1920′s.

Stockings, Tights, and Pantyhose for Curvy Gals

Are you voluptuous? Thick? Full-figured? Plus-sized? Then today’s post is all about you. For too long, I’ve neglected my ladies with vintage, hourglass figures. This time, we’re talking stockings (and other kinds of hosiery) for “real” women.

In this article, I’ll discuss the best places to buy the big three: stockings, thigh highs, and tights. As always, if I leave out your favorite brand, don’t think twice about adding it in the comments!

Stockings
It’s no secret that stockings have the power to make any woman, no matter her size, feel like a sex goddess. A peek of a garter strap, a slight breeze under your skirt, and suddenly you’re part of a tradition of seduction stretching back for generations.

Secrets in Lace has a dedicated Curvy Leg Salon where they stock both lace topped and plain topped stockings. Both are made of a nylon/spandex blend, but the plain welts are a deal at only $19.99/pair.

Stockings Direct, a UK company, also carries Cervin and Levee stockings in sizes for curvy gals. The most inexpensive pair, the Cervin Paris Capri 15, is an incredible $10.94/pair…a great price for any budget.

Last, but not least, Stockingirl carries two varieties of queen sized stockings for big and/or tall girls–the Patricias, which come in packs of 3 for $21.99 and the Divine Divas which go all the way up to a shoe size 13 and a weight of 220 lbs.

Thigh Highs
Don’t feel like dealing with garter straps everyday, but having trouble finding a thigh high stocking that won’t dig, bind, or cut off your circulation? Fortunately, manufacturers and retailers alike are recognizing that women exist in more than “one size fits all.”

Once again, Secrets in Lace offers a selection of two stay-up stockings, both with lace tops. The British retailer MyTights also sells hold-ups from the European brand for voluptuous ladies, Levee. UK Tights also stocks plus-sized hold-ups from Cervin. You can purchase either look shown here for less than $20/pair.

Frederick’s of Hollywood also carries thigh high stockings for plus-sized figures as well.

Tights
Last, but certainly not least, we’ll talk about tights. If you’re a curvy girl who loves tights, then you’re in luck because there’s lots to choose from here.

My very first stop for tights would be We Love Colors. Not only do they stock opaque, striped, and fishnet tights in plus sizes, all of their products are available in over 51 colors and nothing costs more than $20 (some tights are even less than $10!).

MyTights and StockingsHQ would be my next stop for tights as they carry the quality budget labels Pretty Polly and Levante. StockingsHQ also carries the Gipsy line, which I haven’t tried, and MyTights stocks shapewear tights from British fashion gurus Trinny and Susannah if you need a little extra holding power. Finally, UKTights and Frederick’s of Hollywood also stock fashionable tights for the fuller figured ladies.

Now that the weather’s getting cooler, and tights are becoming a necessity in some regions of the globe, I hope this article helps with your search. If you’re a curvy gal, where do you shop for hosiery? Why don’t you tell me in the comments?

The Look for Less: Wolford Lace Tights

Good morning fellow nylon enthusiasts! I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of this season’s lace trend. Lace can give even the simplest of outfits that extra edge which pushes you from flat to fabulous.

Unfortunately, I can’t quite afford the $55 price tag for Wolford’s Flora lace tights. Fortunately, several other designers have caught on to this trend are producing their own variation. So who comes closest to the Wolford label?

I believe I’ve found a winner with the French hosiery brand Love Me, sold through StockingsHQ. Though these are stockings, not tights, the Love Me pattern appears almost identical to the Wolford one but costs a whopping $40 less at only $14.

If you visit Wolford Boutique London, you can see that several other lace patterns due to be released later on this year. You can bet that when they do, Stockings Addict will find the best “knock-off” for you! Happy Shopping!

Emilio Cavallini Tights: Fall/Winter 2009

It appears we have another contender (besides Jonathan Aston) in the category of “Best Budget Hosiery Brand: Fashion Division.” Though I’ve heard of Emilio Cavallini once or twice before, I never really examined this label until my post on faux fishnets.

Now, I’m thinking I need to buy a pair (or three!) of his tights. As an added bonus, Emilio Cavallini maintains a Flickr account with all the latest designs and editorials which is well worth checking out. All the legwear shown below is available at My Tights.com.
