Lingerie & The Movies: Anne Bancroft in The Graduate

Just a few hours ago, I finished my first-ever viewing of The Graduate, the classic 1967 flick starring Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman.  While I enjoyed the plot and story well enough, what really blew me away were the iconic lingerie scenes, including the famous one pictured up above of Mrs. Robinson slipping on her nylon stockings.

After recognizing the manufacturers of two of the most popular looks and realizing that they had very passable modern-day counterparts, I realized I couldn’t go to sleep tonight without making a quick little blog post.  I hope you get as much pleasure out of reading this piece, as I got from writing it…maybe I’ll turn Lingerie & The Movies into a semi-regular series. What do you think?

You’ll have to excuse me while I gush like a star-crazed fan for a minute because this leopard print lingerie by Vanity Fair is one of my favorite sets of all time.  I first wrote about Vanity Fair’s leopard lingerie back in July 2008, 3 months after I started blogging, and I’ve been enamored with it ever since. You can sometimes find the original pieces on e-bay or Etsy, but if you just can’t wait, Lucy B’s Mink leopard print set is a great take on the original. If you’re too curvaceous for a soft-cup bra, take a look at the underwired Tigress bullet bra.

Though I don’t have absolute confirmation, Anne Bancroft’s black lace overlay bra (which is sooo seductive!) looks remarkably similar to other vintage bras I’ve seen from that time period by the label Vassarette.  What I love about this style of bra is how it manages to be wearable, sexy, and confident all at the same time.  If you’re looking for something similar, Mimi Holliday by Damaris makes a great selection of beautiful lace overlay bras. The one pictured above is sold through Figleaves in up to a GG cup.

Last, but not certainly not least, let’s talk stockings.  Because really, how good of a lingerie addict would I be if I neglected this critical part of Mrs. Robinson’s wardrobe?  Mrs. Robinson appears to be wearing nylon RHTs (that means Reinforced Heel Toe) for this scene as I didn’t notice the backseam or darkened sole typical of fully fashioned stockings.  If you want authentic, vintage style, RHT stockings there is no better place to go than Secrets in Lace. And at only $20/pair, they’re an affordable splurge.

The Lingerie Addict Interviews Bernie Dexter, Pin-Up Queen Extraordinaire

I can’t tell you how excited I am to bring you this exclusive interview with the reigning queen of pin-up, Bernie Dexter.  I’ve been a fan of Bernie for even longer than I’ve been blogging, so it was an absolute honor to ask her a few questions for The Lingerie Addict.

But before we get started, I just want to say that Bernie Dexter’s famous “nice act” isn’t an act at all.  From the start of our interview to the finish, she was one of the nicest, kindest and most gracious people I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. And when you remember that she’s a celebrity with literally thousands of people demanding her time, her demeanor becomes all the more impressive.

I hope you enjoy reading this interview as much as I enjoyed giving it, and when you’re done, remember to like Bernie Dexter’s fanpage on Facebook!

First of all, I just want to say thank you so much for letting me interview you. I know you’re a very busy professional, and I appreciate you sparing a few moments of your time.  So let’s hop right to it!  As an icon in the world of pin-up modeling and retro fashion, how do you feel about the recent surge of interest in all things vintage?
Thank you sooo MUCH!,  I think the recent surge and interest  in vintage is amazing. Honestly, I do not think it ever left, but the internet has shown what a HUGE interest there really always has been.  It is wonderful to see women embrace their femininity!

Not only are you a model, you’re a designer as well (and a darned good one, if I say so myself). What makes your designs different from other brands in the world of vintage reproduction fashion?
Thank you very much again!  Well, a big thing is that my collection is 100% made in the U.S.A.!!! A lot of companies are importing from China & India.

I design from my heart…things I want to wear  that I think are flattering on women and girls. I am not JUST in it to make money (though it would be nice) like a lot of the other companies. My designs are a reflection of my own personal style & a celebration of the female form. I choose fabrics based on their comfort and beauty, not just what I see everyone else using, because sometimes women may not know what they really want until it is presented to them.

I prefer to design using 100% cotton and cotton/spandex blends because it just feels better on. I LOVE to dance, so I keep this in mind with choosing fabrics and fit!  One of my rules is if I can’t dance in it…forget it! After all, I do wear my own collection nearly every day & even when on the road doing appearances & Rockabilly shows.

I also LOVE to use colorful prints.  It is so nice to give a new point of view rather then regurgitate what there is already a gluttony of.

What are the best parts of your job?
The best parts of my job are knowing I helped other females feel better about themselves & inspired them to follow their dreams.

The worst parts?
Being compared to pin ups of the past. I really had an uphill battle for a few years trying to show people that I am not an impersonator.  Finally, people can see the difference and that there is more to me than just a haircut!

Many people think of you as a sex symbol…
Ohhh I love it! Heheheee

How would you define sexy?
Sexy is being comfy in your own skin & exuding confidence. Nothing is more of a turn off than someone who comes off as self-entitled or full of themselves.

Do you have any lingerie tips for my readers who want to get that perfect pin-up shilouette?
YES! Foundations! foundations! foundations! I highly recommend my BernieDexter for Lucy B. Merry Widow! It holds everything in without being as extreme as wearing a corset.  When you get comfy with the merry widow, then you can add the Bernie Dexter for Lucy B. steel-boned corset waist cintcher that will be coming soon!

If a woman is just discovering pin-up lingerie, but isn’t sure how to start buying it, what’s the one piece you think she needs in her lingerie drawer?
A garter belt and stockings…that was how I started!  Or you can kill 3 birds with one stone with the Bernie Dexter for Lucy B. Merry Widow!

Can you give us one of your personal “lingerie rules?
Save the ruffles & frillies for at home and in the bedroom. Nothing worse then lumps under your clothing!  Keep it sleek and smooth under your clothing.  ;)

Just a couple of “quickie” questions…
–what’s your favorite color?
red

–your favorite animal?
Cats i love alley cats!

–your favorite type of lingerie?
merrywidows!

And finally, the most important question of all, where can we buy your stuff?

Designer Interviews: Michelle Jouvence of Lucy B Lingerie

Even though the 12 Days of Knickers are over and I’m about to take a blog vacation (more on that tomorrow!), I can’t let December go by without posting another designer interview…especially since I’ve been a fan of this month’s feature for even longer than I’ve been blogging.

Many of you have probably seen Lucy B lingerie without even knowing it. After all, one of her spokesmodels is Bernie Dexter, the world famous pin-up queen.  I’m a fan of Lucy B not only because I love vintage inspired lingerie but also because of how Michelle Jouvence, the designer behind the brand, brings back the fun and playfulness that retro lingerie is supposed to have.

Well…that’s enough from me. Let’s get to the interview!  As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

1) Even though the name of your lingerie line is Lucy B, your name isn’t.  Can you tell us who Lucy B is?
Lucy B is a fictional person from yesteryear.  She represents all of the fabulous women of the 1940′s and 1950′s like Lucille Ball, Lauren Bacall and all of the others whose names don’t begin with and an ”L” and a “B“.

2) Is there a special kind of Lucy B woman? What’s she like?

The Lucy B woman can be either fashion forward or fashion backward, but whether she is a rockabilly pin up girl who loves vintage, or a fashionista who loves the latest trend, she will have a sense of individuality.  Lucy B is for the girl who has a sense of adventure and likes something that has a bit of an edge.

3) Retro and vintage repro lingerie is huge right now.  What makes Lucy B different from other pin-up lingerie designers?
The thing that makes Lucy B so unique, is our sense of whimsy in the design.  There is always something unexpected in the details, something that will make you smile.  Also, all of our lingerie is made right here in Los Angeles, we believe in “Made in America”.

4) I adore your collaboration with Bernie Dexter, and I own several pieces from that line (including the super sexy Scanti Panties).  How did that relationship start, and what’s the best thing about working with Bernie?
Bernie and I originally met and worked together years ago at a fashion show for Atomic Magazine.  Sometime after that I saw pictures she had shot with Danielle Bedics, so I contacted Bernie to do a photo shoot for Lucy B.  The photos turned out amazing and Bernie and I discovered that we had a lot of things in common and really hit it off.  We started working together regularly after that.  She modeled in photo shoots for Lucy B and modeled at the Lingerie Trade shows for us.  We would talk about our vintage lingerie collections and decided to recreate some of Bernie’s treasured vintage lingerie pieces.  The best thing about working with Bernie is how much fun we have together.  Not only is she completely professional and hardworking, she is one of the nicest and most fun people I know.

5) What’s the one piece of Lucy B lingerie every woman must own?
Only one?  Haha, I don’t think I can choose only one.  OK -  the silver screen slip.  It’s so fabulous and comfortable to sleep in.

6) And, finally, the big question…where can we buy your stuff?

Some of stores that carry the current collection are:  Charla’s Place in Los Angeles, CA,  Purrfect Girl in Aptos, CA,  Naked City in Seattle, WA,  Knickers of Hyde Park in Cincinatti, OH, Lavender Lace in Brooklyn, NY and of course the entire collection is available at www.lucyb.com
