What the Addict Wears to Bed: Vintage Slips

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I love vintage slips.  Not only are they a glamorous throwback to a bygone era, they’re the perfect introduction to a world of vintage lingerie..inexpensive, widely available, and flattering on almost everyone.

As a brief aside, there’s one key difference between vintage lingerie and retro lingerie.  Vintage lingerie was made in the past. Retro lingerie just looks like it was made in the past–it’s actually constructed in the present-day.

E-bay is always my first choice for vintage slips, with Vanity Fair and Van Raalte being my preferred brands.  I’ve found some great deals for under $10 so even the most budget-conscious diva can indulge. Etsy is another great choice, though their prices tend to start a bit higher…around the $20 mark.

What do you think of my slip?  I wore one of these on a recent date with The Boyfriend and he loved it even more than my overtly sexy lingerie.  Funny how that works, yeah?

In other news, the “L” key on my laptop keeps sticking.  I can’t begin to tell you how inconvenient that is when you’re writing a lingerie blog.  There’s an “L” everywhere!  Good night, lovelies.

How to Buy Lingerie From E-bay

E-bay is one of the best places online to find anything you want, lingerie included. But there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible. I’ve put some of my favorite tips below…

1) First of all, use good search terms. Be as specific as possible. For example, I want to acquire all of the vintage Vanity Fair leopard print collection, so I not only search for “Vanity Fair” and “Vintage Vanity Fair” but also “Vintage Vanity Fair Leopard” and even “Vintage Vanity Fair Leopard Girdle.”

I also think it’s helpful to use misspelled search terms. Many times people are rushing to put listings up and don’t double check their spelling. I’ve found items for Vanity Fair leopard print items listed under “Vanity Fair loepard,” for example.

2) When you find something you like, check the listing from top to bottom starting with the seller’s feedback. I believe e-bay has recently taken steps to make sure only sellers with high ratings are able to list items, but it’s still worth taking a look if their feedback is anything less than 100%.

You also want to look at the pictures in the listing. Generally speaking, more pictures are better, and you want to make sure pictures are taken from every angle including closeups of seams and any defects. Carefully read the measurements and the seller’s assessment of the quality and condition of the garment.

A seller should be able to say exactly what the measurements for any piece are, both stretched and unstretched. This kind of information is critical for vintage pieces since a size 8 from the 1960′s is not the same as a size 8 today. Finally, study the return policies and shipping costs. I’ve found that many “99 cent” listings often have outrageous shipping fees of $10.00 or more.

If you still can’t find what you need or have any questions at all, don’t be afraid to contact the seller. The way someone responds to you (and how long it takes them to respond) is a crucial factor when I’m deciding whether to buy from someone or not. If I can’t reach you before you get my money, what are the chances of you responding after I send you my money?

I also like to use e-bays tools like saved searches, saved sellers, and e-mail alerts. This allows me to find out when an item I’ve been looking for has been listed.

3) Pay via paypal using your credit card. This is very important. You want to pay using Paypal because it allows you to file a complaint and (potentially) get your money back if you never receive an item.

Paying via credit card gives added consumer protection. If Paypal falls through, you can always file for a return of the funds with your credit card company.

An important note: if you file against a seller, make sure to do so before the time is up (I think it’s 30 days). File even if the person says your item in the mail. You can always close an open case, but you can’t open a case once the allowed time is past.

Final words:

Don’t buy corsets from e-bay. Ever. Most of the corset listings on e-bay are poorly made knock-offs using pirated photos from reputable websites.

Avoid overseas sellers. While there are some exceptions to this rule (such as sellers from the U.K.), I’ve found the headache isn’t worth it. Not only do you have to factor in extended shipping times, you may not have the same payment protection as you would from a seller in the U.S. Some countries (like China) are also notorious for e-bay scams.

Cross-reference products online to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Some sellers significantly mark up the cost of items, or even claim some items are vintage when they’re not (this happens often with Rago and Lady Marlene products). There’s no reason to pay $50 for something you can get elsewhere for $35.

The 3 Kinds of Lingerie You Should Buy Online

Now that we’ve gotten the negative news out of the way by talking about the three kinds of lingerie you should never buy online, let’s move on to a more positive topic–the three types of lingerie that are worth buying from the comfort of your own home.

1) Legwear. My favorite kind of lingerie…this includes stockings, socks, tights, and pantyhose. The internet has a better selection and better prices than any brick-and-mortar store can compete with, and sometimes these retailers offer free shipping.

In addition, it’s much easier to comparison shop online, and you could wind up paying significantly less than the sticker price if you visit coupon websites like Retail Me Not before purchasing. Just in keep in mind that most retailers will not accept stockings returns once the package is open, so make sure you want what you’re buying.

2) International Brands. If you’re a European lingerie fanatic (like me!) , then you know that lots of fantastic lingerie brands simply aren’t available in the US. In this case, online shopping is a godsend.

Before buying anything, though, you need to know your measurements, your converted lingerie size for that particular country or label, and the shipping & return policies for the retailer. It’s also a good idea to do a quick web search and see if anyone has had complaints with the store. As always, you can contact me; I’ve bought from more websites than I can write about.

3) Vintage. E-bay is one of the great online resources for vintage lingerie addicts. I’ve seen some of the most extraordinary pieces at the most extraordinary prices over there. I’ll do a more detailed post on how to buy lingerie from E-bay in the next couple of weeks, but, for now the most important things to remember are that you need to check the seller’s feedback, shipping & return policies, and to always pay via Paypal.

Boudoir Lingerie for Burlesque Dancers

I first mentioned LoveChild Boudoir almost a year ago, when her cute vintage redesigned girdles with the heart on the bum first caught my eye. A few months ago, I splurged and purchased one of her PVC bustle skirts which received rave reviews when I wore it to Dragon*Con.

Now, LoveChild Boudoir is setting my heart all aflutter again with her latest creations. These decadent designs are almost too lovely to confine to the bedroom alone; I may need to take a Burlesque class or three so I can show them off properly!

Lovechild Boudoir is currently selling her couture girdles, corselettes, bullet bras, and bustle skirts through e-bay and her personal website.

A brief interlude…Tabio Fishnets & Jonathan Aston Lace Thigh Highs

Well it’s my last night in Georgia, and I won’t be returning for another 6-7 months, so I’m going to forgo the in-depth corset reviews tonight in favor of spending an extra few hours with my parents.

That said, I have to mention two pairs of stockings I wore during DragonCon: my Jonathan Aston Sweet Roses lace thigh highs, and my Tabio fishnet tights. Not only did they look great, and feel amazing, they stood up to hours of walking, running, crouching, posing, and standing in line. Plus, they’re affordable. The Jonathan Aston lace tights (unfortunately, I can no longer find the thigh highs) retail for $19.75 on MyTights and the Tabio fishnet tights sell for $9.00 on their website.

Finally, check out what just sold for $265.00 on e-bay. I’ve never seen anything quite like this, and I hope it makes the auction winner very, very happy.
