Sponsored Post: What Would You Buy in a $1,000 Shopping Spree at Bare Necessities?

Note: This post is a sponsored post on behalf of Bare Necessities. All words written here are my own.

Just a few weeks ago, Bare Necessities sold its 5 millionth bra, and to celebrate that milestone, they’re giving away five $1,000 shopping sprees in their biggest lingerie sweepstakes ever.

Bare Necessities was recently named InStyle Magazine’s top online lingerie store, and since they carry something like 170 brands, I can see why. Honestly, it can be a little overwhelming to navigate, so to help the sweepstakes entrants (and eventual winners!) get a sense of what they’d like to buy, Bare Necessities asked a few of their fave bloggers, editors, and style consultants to construct their own $1,000 lingerie wardrobes. The Lingerie Addict was one of the bloggers chosen and you can find my $1,000 wardrobe here under Treacle’s Lingerie Picks.

The one thing that page doesn’t tell you, though, is why I chose those pieces. So I thought it’d be good to spend a little time now talking about why a few of the items on the list are among my faves.

Wacoal Lace Embrace Bra ($46, matching panty: $27)–I love lingerie that manages to be sexy and wearable at the same time and this Wacoal bra is it. The embroidery, the detailing, the fit…I’ve seen bras in this style that cost three times as much. Best of all, it’s so comfy that it makes great everyday piece. Available in sizes 32B to 40DD.

Hanky Panky Lace Boyshorts ($29, matching bra: $56)–One of the questions I’m asked often is what lingerie I personally wear everyday, and Hanky Panky is always at the top of that list. I tried them for the first time a few months ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. This is a brand that lives up to the hype, and these lace boyshorts are impossibly comfortable. Available in sizes XS to 3X (search for the plus size option).
Wolford The Twenties Fishnet ($45)–It probably not a surprise, but I love fishnets, and these Wolford Twenties are the most durable ones I’ve found. Not only do they last forever (as in years instead of months), they’re incredibly comfortable. I like tights that you can put on and forget you’re wearing. These are it. Available in sizes XS to L.
Flower Breast Petals, 3-Pack ($6)–Every once in awhile, I need to go braless, but I still don’t want to deal with my nipples showing through my clothes…which is why I keep a supply of these in my cabinet. They’re perfect for making sure your metaphorical headlights stay off. One size fits all.
Commando Big Dot Premier Sheer Tights ($32)–I’ve tried almost every brand of tights out there, but these tights  solved a problem I never even knew I had…a too-narrow waistband. You’ve heard of laser cut panties? Well, this is laser cut hosiery, and it’s insanely comfortable (I just noticed I’m talking about comfort a lot in this blog post). Available in sizes S to L.
Cosabella Soire Wire-free Bra ($46, matching hot short: $28)–I live in bralettes. And sheer black mesh is quite possibly my most fave lingerie material after lace and silk. So I was really excited to find a bra that not only fits like a dream, but is so lightweight and breathable, you literally forget you have it on. If we’re talking everyday lingerie, Cosabella is another of those brands I can’t live without. Available in sizes XS to XL.
Falke Seidenglatt Shine Stay-up Thigh Highs ($36)–Usually I talk about the Falke peacock welt stockings here, but today I thought I’d change it up with another pair of Falke thigh highs I really love…their shiny, sheer Seidenglatts. With a slight sheen and an ultra-wide French lace band, these are the stockings that come to mind when you think thigh highs. And the silicone welt is wonderfully comfortable even for larger thighs (like my own). Available in sizes S to L.
Have you entered the sweepstakes yet? You can find the entry form here. And if you see something you must have now, why not shop the Friends & Family sale? You’ll save 25% with the code FRIEND thru October 31st.

Outfitting your Bra Wardrobe: 9 Bras for Every Body

Today’s guest post comes from Sarah Ellis, and she had this to say about herself, I’m a lingerie snob in every sense of the word. I’ve gotten spoiled during my stints in lingerie retailing and no packaged pair of panties from Target will cut it for me! Although I’ve cut down my lingerie hoarding as of late, as a newly engaged lady I’ve given myself the green light to outfit a new lingerie wardrobe. When I’m not shopping for lingerie you can find me styling affordable handbags for HandbagHeaven.com at work or planning my fabulous wedding!
_______________________________________________________________________________

Problem: You love lingerie, but when it comes to variety in your “bra wardrobe,” you’re lacking. Now, most of us have a collection of bras for both practical and fun occasions. But how complete is your bra wardrobe? Do you have a bra that complements all of your ensembles?

I’ve been taught, “A bra wardrobe should be as complete as your collection of shoes. Every woman has a pair of tennis shoes, sandals and pumps. And, in the same way, a bra wardrobe should include more than one type of bra.”

If you’re like me, you have your “old faithful” bra, the one you go to for your perfect everything. But when it’s time to switch it up or dress for different things, you’ll need a bra that does the right job. That’s where my thorough knowledge of lingerie comes in.

I’ve had a four year stint at Victoria’s Secret as well as worked in a lingerie boutique that specialized in offering “speciality sizes” for well-endowed women. I’ve learned the ins and outs of proper bra fits, the importance of support, and feeling fabulous. Lingerie can literally transform you from the inside out, which is why we love it, right? Now, let’s outfit you!

Balconette: Pronounced, “bal-con-ay,” this bra is probably my favorite. It is characterized by the square neckline it creates, which is great for wearing with tops that have a low cut or square neckline. It showcases decolletage and can balance a heavy or small bust nicely. Sometimes a balconette bra has half cups or push up which both give the illusion of a bigger bust. (Shown: La Perla Villa Toscana Balconette Bra)

Convertible: You know that bra that you need help figuring out? The one that can be worn every which way and has straps that alter to fit just about everything? The convertible bra is the best invention since sliced bread and can save you some serious cash in the long run. There are versions that go from strapless to halter to low back to one shoulder and beyond! (Shown: Felina Extreme Convertible Push-up Bra)

Demi: A demi bra is the most typical bra in a woman’s wardrobe. The cups are angled to expose part of the breast tissue without being too revealing. They offer ¾ coverage and don’t have any extra padding. (Shown: Felina Harlow Full Busted Demi Bra)

Full Coverage: A full coverage bra is favored by large busted women who need extra support. The cup covers the entire breast and holds the breast tissue in against the body. Large breasted women need this extra support to keep their breast tissue from “jiggling” or moving too much. (Shown: Wacoal Retro Chic Full Figure Underwire Bra)

Push Up: For every small busted girl out there, a push up bra can be your best friend. But busty gals can enjoy the benefits of a push up bra. Push up bras use foam, gel, water, or air to lift the breast tissue. Large busted women tend to shy away from push up bras because they think it will make their breasts look a cup size larger. A push up bra doesn’t actually add any volume, but the padding lifts and pushes your breasts up higher which can make them look larger. Or, as I prefer, “more perky.” (Shown: Wacoal iBra Push-up Bra)

Strapless: Strapless bras are a must have for every lady. Even if you rarely wear strapless tops or dresses there are some tanks and tops that just require a strapless bra. Strapless bras have gotten a major upgrade lately. They’re more comfortable and some even come with a grip that will keep it from slipping after long wear. (Shown: DKNY Autograph Strapless Bra)

Sports Bra: If you’re ever doing any type of physical activity you absolutely need a sports bra. NOT to be confused with a crop bra. Even light walking or jogging can stretch the ligaments that support the breasts as much as 78%. That ligament DOES NOT retract, so once it’s stretched, it’s permanent. That means saggy boobs, which aren’t good for anyone. You need proper support for physical activity. Ask any bra specialist and they’ll give you the low-down on what makes a good sports bra. (Shown: Champion Maximum Control High Support Spot Comfort No Wire Sports Bra)

Racerback Bra: Which is most definitely not to be confused with a “razorback” – a type of pig. We’re talking lingerie here people, not swine. Anyway, a racerback bra is noted by the straps in the back that make a y shape. They’re good for keeping your straps in place or hidden underneath tank tops. (Shown: Calvin Klein Black Racerback Underwire Bra with Lace)

Wireless Bras: A wireless bra offers the most amount of comfort a bra could ever offer, no poking wires! They’re great for post-surgery patients or anyone who needs an extra delicate bra. However, they’re typically not recommended for busty gals that need the support. (Shown: Bali Double Support ® All-Over Stretch Bra)

The list goes on an on, but you get the idea. Just like you need a well rounded selection of shoes, your bra wardrobe needs to be full of variety too. Try something new and you may be pleasantly surprised by the bra you never knew you needed.

Lingerie Addict Flashback: My Very First Post

Last Friday, in an e-mail sent out to my Very Important Addicts, I offered a prize to the first 3 people who could guess the subject of my very first post. I got a lot of responses, but not very many correct answers, so I thought I’d reblog the article for everyone to see. In a fit of creative genius, my very first post is titled…My Very First Post. Ladies and gentlemen, these are the stockings that started it all.

The stockings above are one of the most gorgeous pairs I have ever seen.  Super sheer legs (8 denier nylon/lycra blend, so you’d better have baby soft hands or a pair of hosiery gloves) and fabulously glamorous welts.

Seriously…peacock feathers.  How luxurious is that?

Falke has a great reputation for quality and art in their hosiery, so these aren’t the kind of stockings you’ll throw away after only one wear.  Unfortunately, this kind of indulgence doesn’t come cheap.

However, if you like stockings, then I believe these are well worth it.  Not only is the turquoise and gold welt like jewelry for your legs (the silicone bands are also super comfortable and stretch to fit my larger-than-average thighs without slipping down or digging in), the nylon is incredibly soft and feels like silk going on.

Simply put, these make your legs look and feel like a million dollars.

In case you can’t tell, I have a mad crush on these stockings.  If you’re interested, they’re sold here.

Lingerie Addict Exclusive: La Perla Miss Studio Collection

A few months ago, before my subscription to Lucky Magazine expired, I ran across some very exciting news.  La Perla, the famous luxury lingerie brand, was preparing to release a brand new, lower priced line especially for women 20-30 years old.  And they were calling it the La Perla Miss Studio Collection.

Instead of paying upwards of $150 for a panty and $250 for a bra, the new line starts at $37 for briefs and $65 for bras.  Now everybody can own a little bit of La Perla.  But before you worry that La Perla is becoming too accessible, the new collection will only be available in two stores: brick-and-mortar Bloomingdale’s and e-tailer Bare Necessities.

I thought my readers might like a super-exclusive sneak peek (you can’t buy this lingerie until the end of this month…at the earliest!) so I asked Bare Necessities for a few select press images.  These photos were only released to The Lingerie Addict, and they’re so fresh that Bare Necessities hadn’t even had time to find a live model yet.

Though we both know that you can only get the full effect of lingerie when you’re able to view and touch it in person, I’m very happy with the color, embroidery, and detailing I can see on the images below.  And while these pieces don’t have the same drama, weight, and glamour of the original line, La Perla’s new Miss Studio collection is fresh, wearable, and pretty.  Plus (and I’m sure this is what they had in mind all along), it’s a great way of introducing younger women to fine lingerie…and making them customers for life.

What do you think of La Perla’s Miss Studio Collection?  Please tell me in the comments!

Lingerie at the Oscars: What Should You Wear Underneath an Evening Gown?

February 27th, 2011 was the night of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, and while the fashion industry was all aflutter over the couture gowns by the likes of Valentino, Rodarte, Givenchy, I found myself wondering what America’s favorite starlets were wearing beneath their dresses.  And, perhaps even more importantly, I wanted to know how us “regular folks” could use this kind of lingerie information for our own special occasions.

That’s where Jenny Altman, Style Director at Bare Necessities, comes in.  I had the opportunity to interview Jenny on March 1st, just a couple of days after the awards ceremony, and she volunteered to share some of her fave lingerie tips with readers of The Lingerie Addict.  So let’s get started!

Treacle: Did you notice any major lingerie mishaps on the red carpet?

Jenny: I noticed a little nipple show-through. It’s been a “nipple year,” but it never should be. A lot of celebs go braless, and of course they can, but a little nipple concealer is so easy.  A lot of celebrities were also pulling up their strapless dresses all night which is so unattractive when there are so many strapless bras. When going all out for a dress this glamorous (like evening wear or wedding dresses) it’s best to sew your bra in.  Or bring your shapewear with you when trying on dresses so you know how it will actually look when put on.  When I was a stylist, we always sewed the bra in. Seamstresses won’t mind.

Treacle: Let’s talk about a few of my fave dresses from that night, and the kind of lingerie you should wear to give the best silhouette.  This bright red strapless Valentino dress on Anne Hathaway took my breath away. If one of my readers wanted to wear a dress in a similar style, what would go underneath?

Jenny: With this kind of dress, you definitely want a strapless bra.  But you don’t want your bra popping over the top of the dress either, so get one a little on the low side.  And you don’t need major silicone to keep the bra up; just make sure it fits nice and tight.  Donna Karan and Felina both make great strapless bras.  And with any gown, start with a really good seamless panty (like Commando) because who needs panty lines?  If she were a regular woman who needed shapewear, a nice highwaisted shaper with no lines (like the Spanx Super Higher Power) is great.

Treacle: Great suggestions, Jenny! Let’s move onto Camilla Alves’ gorgeous deep plunge gown.  I’m not sure if there’s even a bra that goes that low.

Jenny: This Kaufman Franco gown is all about the plunge, but the good thing is you don’t have to worry about your bottom half.  Even if you’re not proud of your butt and thighs, this dress conceals all that.  But you must have good shoulders, a good chest, and good boobs.  There’s not even room in there to add lifters, so your boobs must be even-shaped.  A dress like this works better if you’re a little on the smaller side, but you have to be honest with yourself and ask if your boobs could handle this.  Camilla looks great here, and she doesn’t look like she’s falling out.  If you wear this style, you want to use nipple concealers and fashion tape (to hold the dress in place), and a nice little waist cincher like this one from Cass.
Treacle: Nice!  I’m sure we can all agree that a very pregnant Natalie Portman looked radiant in her magenta Rodarte gown. Do pregnant women need shapewear? Is it even safe for them to wear?

Jenny: Pregnant women need to feel comfortable and supported while being “held in.”  Maternity shapewear is great for that. It’s not “slimming,” but it gives extra support and lift at the tummy area.  As pregnant women get bigger, their tummy can weigh them down and so many pregnant women like shapewear because it supports their belly.  If you look at the Spanx Power Mama Panties and Footless Pantyhose, for example, you can see there’s no compression around the tummy…just a lifting band.  As for her bra, they may have just sewn it in.  Women with a fuller busts (whether through pregnancy or otherwise) should aim for a strapless bra from a company like Panache to get better support.

Treacle: Let’s move on to what to wear under the classic, slinky, bias-cut gowns. I’m thinking of Gwyneth Paltrow’s plunge-front column dress in particular.

Jenny: This is a tough one because the fabric is not that forgiving. Someone like Gwyneth is probably going braless. If she wanted a little perkiness, I’d recommend breast tape to lift her up a little.  If you can go braless in a dress like this, go with a really nice thigh shaper or something that ends at the calf so we never see it.  T.C. Fine makes a great capri body shaper.  It gives a little butt lift, a little thigh smoothing, and a little compression but is very, very sheer.  So long as it ends just above the waist line, you should be good.  If you need full support where a bra should be, Va Bien makes a nice, super-low, plunge bodysuit that gives really nice tummy control.  But column dresses are not really the best option for most women.  You have to be tall and thin–almost boyish shaped. Any curve will make the dress look out of proportion.
Treacle: For the last dress, let’s discuss Shaun Robinson’s blue Christiane Kane gown.  So many formal dresses are asymmetrical now, and I definitely want to talk about the best lingerie to wear under a garment like that.

Jenny: With a dress like this, the strap is actually very, very thin…it’s hard to match up the strap with the dress and have it not be seen.  So I would go with a strapless bra.  Because the fabric and color is very unforgiving (you can see a little bit of pulling on her hip and she’s not a big girl), you could also go with a shaping slip.  Body Wrap does a sheer, iridescent piece that’s really nice because it’s a bra and shaping slip in one.  Flexees also makes an all in one, strapless, full slip.  She doesn’t need super compression; she just needs to make sure everything is nice and smooth. And you want to avoid a separate bra and shaper because then you have to worry about the lines and where it ends.
Treacle: Any other general lingerie comments or tips for evening wear?
Jenny: I love the way there was no visible hosiery at the Oscars, and I think that’s a great thing.  Everyone wants to wear a gorgeous shoe, everyone has a pedicure, and who wants to see nylon webbing over that?  Footless hosiery are really great for brides and regular women too because you get the option of control top hosiery, but you don’t have to cover your feet.
I always recommend nude shapewear unless you’re wearing a black or navy dress.  Never wear white; it’s too bright. But nude shapewear works under so many different colors.
Treacle: What about nude options for darker skin tones like Shaun’s?

Jenny: Even on Shaun’s skintone, a regular nude shade is fine.  You’re just looking for it to blend in and be less noticeable.
Last thing…investing in a few good shaping pieces is always really useful.  Even if you don’t wear it now, if you go to a wedding a year from now, you have a piece to wear again and again. And don’t buy shapewear that’s too small because then it has the opposite effect.  Go with the right size so it can slim you instead of you bulging over it. No one has to know it’s the larger size.  And you want to be able to breathe, eat, and have fun so look at going with moderate compression instead of super compression so you can wear the garment all night.

Treacle: Thanks so much for your time, Jenny, and for your excellent lingerie advice.  I have a feeling this will be a piece my readers can refer to again and again.

Ask the Addict: Comfortable Lingerie for Everyday

Today’s Ask the Addict feature is inspired by a question from longtime reader Orilonise, who asked via Facebook, “I love lingerie, but usually keep it to my more professional or formal attire. How do you suggest women wear lingerie with casual clothes like jeans?”

What a great question! Though I often write about the sexy stuff here on the blog, the honest truth is I spend a lot of my time in casual lingerie. And when I’m buying lingerie for everyday, I want these 3 things:

  • comfort
  • easy to care for
  • seamless

Comfort matters because when you’re wearing a piece of lingerie all day underneath your casual clothes, you don’t want to think about it.  When it comes to casual lingerie, I firmly believe that it’s okay to be a little less fashionable and a little more comfortable.

Being easy to care for matters because you tend to wear your basics frequently.  Most of my everyday lingerie is machine washable; I use a lingerie bag, put the machine on delicate cycle/cold wash, then hang to dry overnight.

Finally, seamless lingerie matters because there are new things less fashionable than visible panty lines (or visible bra lines for that matter).  Unless your lingerie is meant to be seen, it should remain invisible…in every way.

With that in mind, here are a three of my favorite everyday brands:

Hanky Panky–I tried Hanky Panky for the very first time about a month ago, and I’m a convert.  Their lace lingerie is not only comfortable, it’s easy to care for, and incredibly cute.  Though this brand is most famous for their thongs, I’m a big fan of their bikinis.  Best of all, they sell plus-sized panties that fit up to a size 20W.

Commando–I first heard of Commando at last year’s CurveNY when I was introduced to their seamless tights. Since then, I’ve had opportunity to try out their boyshorts, and I quite like the results.  Commando also produces girlshorts, thongs, and bikinis. The only drawback? They don’t go beyond a size L which (based on how they fit me) accommodates a maximum 40″ hip.

Le Mystere–The first two brands I talked about specialize in panties. This one specializes in bras. And they are among the most comfortable bras I own.  I’ve heard some people complain about how boring they are, and that may be true. But take it from someone who knows, when you want a bra that makes you forget you’re wearing a bra, Le Mystere is the way to go.
