Plus Size Lingerie Review: Ashley Graham for Addition Elle Phenomenon Bra Set
Note: This lingerie was purchased by The Lingerie Addict for the purpose of review. All opinions are my own.
As the bodysuit and lingerie-as-outerwear trends continue to rule the fashion world, one of the hottest looks for 2017 is high neck lingerie. Never one to shy away from trends, I wanted to see how this style worked for a plus size body. I looked no further than Ashley Graham’s lingerie collection for Canadian-based retailer, Addition Elle.
Although I have my issues with Ashley Graham as a voice for the plus size community, watching the collection on the New York Fashion Week runway was one of the first times I can remember seeing high neck lingerie in plus sizes. While aesthetically I appreciate this set and these designs, the models shown on the runway, and Ashley Graham herself, look nothing like me. I couldn’t exactly visualize what these pieces would look like on someone who is visibly plus sized and not tall, hourglass shaped, or with a flat tummy. Essentially, I wanted to know what this looked like on someone with my body type, including a visible belly outline and rolls.
The sizing for Ashley Graham’s lingerie collection for Addition Elle varies by style, but select sets are available up to a 4X and a 44H. It’s not the widest possible size range, but considering how many lingerie brands end their plus selections at a XXL, it’s more inclusive than most. I chose the Phenomenon Convertible Bra with Choker ($27.49 on sale) and matching High Cut Panty with Floral Mesh ($12.49 on sale) on aesthetics alone. To me, this was the standout set from the collection, and I liked the delicacy of the beige tones paired with the delicate floral pattern. Shipping from Canada was seamless. The items arrived fairly quickly after purchase.
Product and Fit:
The vibe for Ashley Graham’s lookbooks is ultra glam. I expected to have that same feeling when I put on this set. Unfortunately, the fit of the halter bra felt so off to me that I really didn’t tap into any type of sexy. The bra is unnecessarily complicated. It’s structured like a strapless, so it features an internal tape edge to keep it up, yet at the same time, there’s a multitude of straps to figure out. As a strapless bra, it fits. As a halter bra, it’s off.
I didn’t even notice the additional black straps in the front, next to the halter straps, until I looked again at the website images. These straps are removable, but I question whether they’re even necessary if the bra has the internal design of a strapless in addition to the high neck mesh, which is not removable.
The high neck design element is what initially drew me to this set, but it turned out to be the most disappointing part about this bra. In the pictures of the bra on my body, the halter is unfortunately held in place by a knot I tied in the back.
The elastic features two loops to hook the halter into, but both leave the elastic so loose it just sags down in the front on me. I ended up tying a knot in the back in order for it to stay up. I really shouldn’t have to do that for an item to fit like it’s shown. I wish this bra had adjustable elastic, like what you would find on bra straps.
The panties are not as high-waisted as I would like, but they fit how I expected based on the item description: high cut with the waistline near the belly button. I sized up to a 3X, as I usually do in panties these days, and they fit well without digging in. I naturally wanted the keyhole to frame my bellybutton, even though they fall below the bellybutton on the site. Personally, I always want panties to hit above my visible belly line.
The floral mesh is by far the star of this set. It’s the perfect balance of slightly see-thru yet still opaque enough not to show everything. The embroidered design is light-handed, detailed but not too much. Overall, the design feels balanced.
I wish I could say this set fits as good as it looks. While the panties are totally wearable, I don’t feel I should have to knot the elastic in the bra for the halter to fit me correctly. Either design it with a tie-halter to begin with or make the elastic more adjustable. The bra just feels overworked, and as a result, this set underdelivers for me.
