Introducing Bettie Page Lingerie by Playful Promises
Is there anyone more iconic in the lingerie world than Bettie Page? The "Queen of Pinups" has been an influence on American culture for generations, inspiring trends in beauty, fashion, and art. It's hard to imagine a world without her; nearly everyday, I run across a Bettie Page reference of one kind or another.
After years of lying dormant, the Bettie Page Lingerie brand is back, this time shepherded by vanguard UK lingerie label Playful Promises, a company that's gone from strength to strength over the last year, debuting both a plus size range and a full bust range within a matter of months.
Unlike some other celebrity license holders, Playful Promises seems to truly understand the Bettie Page aesthetic. Not only does this first collection contain such quintessential silhouettes as the cone bra (which immediately sold out in all sizes), the photography shows a keen appreciation and understanding of the vintage fetish aesthetic. The image are bawdy, yes, but they're also playful...just like Bettie Page's most famous work.
It's wonderful to see a company take on such a cherished figure and get it right. Obviously, this collection is inspired by lingerie history, by the legacy of one of the greatest models who ever lived, but it doesn't feel dated. Instead, Bettie Page's status as a legend is re-established, made relevant all over again for a new generation of lingerie lovers. Fingers crossed that next season brings with it a bit of fishnet and leopard print.
