Lingerie Fashion Week Recap: Brands to Watch Spring/Summer 2015
Another season of Lingerie Fashion Week has come and gone and left behind a number of brands to watch! This list of brands isn’t for the newcomers alone! Some of our favorite TLA brands continue to innovate and evolve bringing fabulous lingerie season after season.
As you might have noticed, Lingerie Fashion Week made a shift this season. Instead of coinciding with a hectic lingerie market in August, the show was moved to October. While it may have been a challenge for non-local editors and bloggers to make the trip to New York so shortly after market, the choice to move seemed to be a wise one given the show’s focus on press previews vs. sales.
I found my ability to interact with the brands was greater given my attention wasn’t split, as in the past, between events at two venues. Additionally, there was a designated press suite area which was a huge win! There, I was able to do what I love the most (and why I keep writing!) – have quality conversations with designers, hear their stories and inspiration, and touch and feel the pieces!
See below for more on the brands to watch. Which brands will be on your list for Spring/Summer 2015? Let me know!
Zumruduanka – Exquisite Opulence
One of my favorite new brands is Zumruduanka. This line, based out of Istanbul, is the creation of two sisters, Kiymet and Nimet Ulubay. The brand name represents the phoenix, the mythical, sacred firebird with colorful plumage, and is infused through out the collections with many pieces having “tails.”
My initial attraction to Zumruduanka was their gorgeous collection of beautiful, hand made eye masks. These masks are even more luxurious up close – especially the ones adorned with crystals! The designers explained that the masks are made of silk on both sides so when you are sleeping, your delicate eye skin is protected. Additionally, the brand has a collection of straight up sexy blindfolds! (You may have seen this on Instagram!) Clearly, this is a brand that understands and embraces femininity, sensuality, and fun! Most pieces have detachable accessories, like feathers, so you can choose your own adventure.
The brand has an extensive collection featuring a number of designs, fabrics, and looks. They are even working on a few men’s pieces! I’m excited to see what will catch on here in the U.S. market as well as around the world and see how the designers edit and evolve their line. What do you want to see?
Lola Haze – Urban Chic
I have long been a fan of Laura Mehlinger, designer of Lola Haze, and her oh-so-cool aesthetic. She consistently nails it every time with her fun, edgy, and modern looks that can go from night to day with the simple addition of a blazer and pencil skirt!
Laura is masterful at mixing textures and her pieces always have such dimension. I loved the intersection of the sparkly bodysuit with the tough, full zipper hardware. It’s one I may need to add to my collection. However, what I fell in love with most for this upcoming season is her amazingly creative pieces that feature a “burn out” pattern that Laura hand crafted using incense! Who would have imagined something so intriguing was possible?!
Lola Haze continues to impress and I look forward to seeing where the line goes next. Let us know your favorites.
Tia Lyn – Plus Sized Perfection
One of the highlights of Lingerie Fashion Week for me was reconnecting with designer, Tia Lyn. Tia is the exceptional, veteran designer of the fabulous plus sized lingerie brand that is her name sake. This was most exciting because Tia Lyn was one of the first shows I covered in my blogging career. To see this brand still thriving after all these years is truly encouraging!
Tia Lyn’s pieces are feminine and flattering. Silky, lacy, sheer, and scalloped elements are the foundation of the collection, although some of my favorite pieces involved ruching. The brand has truly grown since the beginning to include these varied elements, colors, and silhouettes and I look forward to seeing even more offerings. What would you love to see added in the plus sized market?
You! Lingerie – Masterful Maternity
How do I love You! Lingerie? Let me count the ways! I’m not a mom, but I love the positive energy around celebrating the beautiful bodies of expecting and nursing moms. For generations, society has depicted these bodies as needing to be covered up or dowdy, but You! Lingerie breaks the mold and allows these mamas to feel beautiful while embracing their changing figures.
At Lingerie Fashion Week, we were treated to a runway show of the collection. I was impressed with the diversity of silhouettes and styles from the sweet pastels to the vibrant bolds and prints. Founder and Creative Director, Uyo Okebie-Eichelberger, also included lingerie trends like cut outs and colorblocking.
I love that there is something for every type of mom and can’t wait to see what’s next. What other lingerie trends do you think needs to be incorporated into maternity next?
Suzy Black – Every Day Glam
Another newcomer that caught my eye this season is Suzy Black. The brainchild of Diondra Julian, the brand is designed for a regular woman to feel like “a dream girl.” At a presentation following Lingerie Fashion Week, Diondra shared how she wants every woman to be able to find something fantastic (and affordable) for herself. She doesn’t believe being flirty and fun should be restricted to the weekend alone. She believes in “happy times on a Tuesday.”
There were so many eye-catching pieces. I loved that the pieces incorporated everything from intricate embellishments and vibrant patterns to mixed textures and elegant volume. The collection alone was not the only allure. I was also impressed with the incorporation of models of color, a number of them sporting natural hairstyles. While our community here values the beauty of all types of women, we do know that that the industry has progress to make so seeing this was a step in the right direction.
What’s most appealing to you about Suzy Black?
Overall, this Lingerie Fashion Week is my favorite to date. I’m excited about the new brands and designers as well as the evolution of industry staple brands. Let me know your thoughts on what you see! What’s your favorite? What more do you want to see?
