My Love Affair with the Suspender Belt

By Pippa

I remember the precise moment that I fell in love with suspender belts, and I remember the exact one in particular that started my obsession. About three years ago, as I walked home from uni, every day I’d walk past a big department store and never pay it much attention, but one particularly wet and rainy day, I noticed this stunning set from Lejaby in the window, and my lingerie collection has since grown bigger and better due to the discovery of suspender belts.

This immediately became my very favourite thing in the world, and to this day remains one of my all-time favourites. It’s because of the suspender belt (which, strictly speaking is a waspie with suspender straps) that this outfit caught my eye and was such an object of my desire for so long.

Buying yourself a set of lingerie with a suspender belt is comparable to a man buying a three-piece suit — not something you wear every day, often a little more than you were hoping to spend, something to be treasured and looked after, and something usually reserved for special occasions. There’s something wonderfully empowering about a matching suspender belt, which I have no doubt you’ll understand as soon as you put one on (if you haven’t already). A good fit is essential — too tight and it’ll dig in, too loose and it won’t do the job of holding up stockings (useless!).

Every lingerie addict needs a fair few suspender belts in their lingerie collection, whether they’re shapewear/body sculpting, sheer lace, frilly, strappy elastic, high waisted/deep, low rise/narrow, retro, 4-strap, 6-strap, 8-strap… there is a style for everyone!

But even then, there are brilliantly innovative brands around creating whole new categories for themselves. Here are some of the weirder and (most definitely) wonderful suspender belts available today.

I’ve always loved the look of that Bordelle suspender, but I have serious doubts about how good it looks outside a studio…

My favourite suspender belts are by Kiss Me Deadly, but What Katie Did and Stockings and Romance are also fantastic.

My favorite is my Rago 1294 high waisted girdle. It gives me support, it’s comfortable and it looks fantastic. I can’t recommend it enough.

Ah, now I had a wardrobe purge a while back and got rid of nearly all my tights – excluding fishnets and sparkly ones for very short skirts – and the suspender belt or girdle makes the basis for every outfit, it’s the first and most important item I choose. The majority of mine are from Kiss Me Deadly, and there really isn’t anything to beat the feeling of having a matching set of divine lingerie and secure stockings under the dullest most practical outfit.

But I do sigh at a lot of ‘fashion’ offerings. If you want to wear them in the bedroom only, there probably isn’t any harm at all in slender straps, plastic clips, or a belt that sits on the hips. But woe betide a girl who wants her stockings to stay up, let alone a seam stay in place, with a fashion belt! Sadly, it puts too many ladies off wearing stockings outside the bedroom.

Ladies – try a six strap belt that sits on your waist, and has metal clips. You’ll be converted forever, I promise. (Even better, a roll on girdle that will leave no lines under clothes and can be rolled down and back up again when you visit the ladies, rather than spending hours fiddling with clips or having vpl).

KathtTea – Gaby from Hopeless Lingerie here – that garter belt was actually one of the first I ever made, from my first collection, almost 4 years ago – and unfortunately is no longer available!
