25 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

So I’ve seen this “25 Things” meme floating about on random blogs all over the internet, and I thought it’d be fun to do the same thing here, especially since I don’t spend many articles talking about myself (it’s all about the lingerie love, after all).  I’m typing these out as they come to me, with no drafts or edits, so I’ll be just as surprised as you are with the end result.  Tell me what you think in the comments!

1) I practiced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for a little over 4 years, and was once the champion in my division for Georgia, the Southeast, and the Midwest.

2) I just got my nose pierced in September. There aren’t very many pictures of me with it yet.

3) I had an imaginary friend named Frederico when I was a kid.

4) I had one of the very first Game Boys from 1989 and played it until it (finally) broke in 2009.

5) I love comic books, and I am such a geek that I regularly attend comic book conventions.

6) I backpacked alone from Moscow, Russia to London, England in 2008.

7) Most horror movies are too scary for me to watch.  Seriously.

8) I don’t care that it’s passé…bacon is one of my most favorite foods ever.

9) Speaking of food, the thing I miss most about moving away from home is my Mom’s cooking (mmmm…collard greens).

10) And while we’re on the subject of food, I could live off of desserts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I just can’t get enough sugar.

11) I am addicted to Coke Zero.  It’s right up there with the printing press for best invention ever.

12) My first three jobs out of college were as a domestic violence counselor, rape crisis counselor, and children’s foster home counselor (I’m really passionate about social issues).

13) Treacle isn’t the name on my birth certificate, but I’ve used it so much for so long that I answer to it like I would my given name.

14) I chose the name Treacle because treacle (the actual foodstuff) is thick, dark, and sweet…kind of like me!  ;)

15) My blog’s first name was Stockings Addict, because I had just discovered hosiery and no one else was really writing about it at the time.

16) There is no cooler feeling in the world than when the people you look up to the most think of you as peers.

17) I wear a size 11 narrow shoe. If my feet were smaller, I’d probably write a shoe blog too!

18) Trashy supernatural fiction is my favorite guilty pleasure. If it involves vampires, witches, or ghosts, I’m all over it.

19) I’m really, really introverted…that might be because I’m also an only child.

20) But I’ve always wanted an older brother.

21) Explosions in the Sky is my favorite band. Their music is perfect for almost everything.

22) I was really worried I wouldn’t have enough things to say about myself to fill 25 lines.  I still am.

23) One of the scariest thing I’ve ever done is pack up everything I own into my little Honda Civic Hybrid and move from Atlanta to Seattle (2700 miles for my non U.S. readers).  It’s also one of the best things I’ve ever done.

24) A runner-up in the scary/awesome category? Starting this blog.

25) I am happier right now than I ever thought I could be.  Really.

The Glamorous Pin-up Art of Bill Ward

As you’ve probably noticed, most Friday features here on The Lingerie Addict are dedicated to photography.  But every once in awhile, I like to change it up my highlighting artists of a different sort.  In the past year or so, I’ve featured modern favorites like Neryl, Amano Jyaku, and Caitlin Shearer, but today I’m going wayyy back and paying tribute to the grandaddy of glamorous pin-ups, Bill Ward.

If you like what you see here, then check out the book, The Glamour Girls of Bill Ward.  As always, I’d love to hear what your favorite image is in the comments!

Review: Are These 2 New Corsetry Books Worth the $$$?

Today’s guest post comes from Julia B. of Sew Curvy.  Julia is a true corset aficionado, and her website is an excellent resource for corset patterns, fabrics, and trims.  Julia also writes a vintage style blog, Marmalade Kiss, which is great for reading more about vintage sewing tips and tricks.

Here, she gives us an expert’s take on two new corsetry books: Underwear: Fashion in Detail by Eleri Lynn & Corsets: A Modern Girl’s Guide by Velda Lauder.
___________________________________________________________________________________

I’ve recently treated myself to 2 corsetry books … and as both have been mentioned in a number of corset related ‘places’ on the interweb, I thought i’d write about my take on each …

The first, and my favourite, is the V&A Museum’s Underwear Fashion in Detail. All I can say is this…I bought it during a trip to the V&A in London  (the book is only available there at the moment) and when I saw it, I couldn’t put it down, far less leave it there!! I don’t want to embarrass myself describing bodily functions, but…my heart was pounding with every page I turned!

It is a BIG book, and so inside, the pictures are big.  A good start!

Written by Eleri Lynn, a fashion curator at the V&A Museum,  the book is not dedicated to corsets alone, but I would say that probably 75% is to do with corsetry in some form or another, be it bra’s, girdles, corsets, bodices, bustiers, garters, etc.

It looks at the evolution of underwear dating from the 16th century, right up to the present including pieces by famous designers through the ages, there are nighties, dressing gowns, slips, socks, stockings and pants included aswell – something for everyone!  And for the corsetmakers out there who consternate over their every stitch,  there is even a Mr Pearl “rush job” which shows what happens when a corset is made in a hurry – even by the best in the business!

There are more  pictures than writing – each peice is described in detail, with diagrams and one or more photos – some of which are shot very close, giving incredible detail – it’s almost like looking at the things up close and in person!

Overall, this book is an Inspiration.  I just love it… every time I look in there, my mind is overwhelmed with ideas.  From my own perspective of one who makes corsets, It’s an absolute  MUST HAVE.

The other book is less pleasing – from the same perspective as before that is. It is the new book by Velda Lauder–Corsets: A Modern Girls Guide.

I guess it’s been written to catch the wave of interest in everything burlesque, and if you are a modern girl who knows nothing about corsets, but wants to find out, then this is definitely the book for you.

It is right up to the minute – including details from London Fashion Week which has only just finished –  hence the long delay between it’s apparent availability and eventual delivery.

It is TINY – handbag size – which I was surprised about but this means that the book is not “comfortable”, and the pictures are smaller than I like.   I know this might sound shallow but, size definitely matters here and this book just isn’t big enough.

The pictures, unsurprisingly, are mostly of the author’s own corsets. This isn’t such a bad thing because she does make lovely corsets with a focus on modern, not historical, but there is no detailed information on the famous and elusive “uber curve”.  Although the book also covers historical aspects of corsetry, along with  ’modern’ corsetry against backdrops of high fashion, couture, burlesque, and fetish, the book doesn’t tell me anything I didn’t know already as somebody who has been obsessed with corsets for a number of years.

In saying that I am dissapointed with this book,  I am not decrying the author’s talent or her eye for a good design, or indeed her ability  - I have been laced into one of her corsets by the woman herself, and I can tell you, that whatever her uber curve is, it works!  Velda Lauder corsets are extremely light, extremely strong, and surprisingly sparsley boned for the ‘control’ they give and this is why they are a constant source of fascination and inspiration for me.

BUT, in my own humble opinion, this is not a “Must Have” book. It doesn’t do anything better or more interestingly, that Valerie Steele’s The Corset: A Cultural History. However, for beginners on the path to corset obsession, then it is a pretty book to have and less ‘academic’ than others.

Thanks so much for your thorough reviews, Julia.  I’ve already added Underwear: Fashion in Detail to my Amazon wish list, and I can’t wait until it’s officially available to order!
