How to Turn Tights into Stockings (and Knee-Highs!)

Ever bought a pair of tights that didn’t fit right, but you couldn’t bear to part with them? Then turn those tights into stockings and socks! Here are three easy do-it-yourself guides for re-purposing your legwear.

Down with Clutter shows how to cut, fold, and hand-sew the hem on your brand new stockings. (Link no longer works.)

Nikki Shell uses stretch lace and a sewing machine to transform her crocheted black tights.

Sage Meadow Studios takes things one step further and turns her striped tights into adorable knee high socks (pictured above).

I can’t wait to give this a try. How about you?

    Hello Lingerie Addict,

I just wanted to let you know that none of the links on this page work any more. :( xx

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. It looks like one of the blogs is no longer around but for the other two, I was able to find new links. I’ve updated the post to reflect this. Thanks again. :-)

Ha! Classy! I, too, just hack off the waist/panty part and run around in the unfinished stockings. It's always worked fine for me.

And just today I bought three new pair of soon-to-be stockings! Thigh-highs are hard to find otherwise, especially if you want the ones without the grippy shit (aka the stay-ups).

This is wonderful. I live where it gets quite cold in the winter and 15 denier stockings just don't cut it. This is a great way to keep me warmer during these winter months. Thanks!

I like the idea of DIY custom stockings. It's almost a definite that you'll have something that no one else does.

I've had pretty good luck just cutting off my tights and *not* sewing them. They look kind of unfinished, but I like that look. And so far they haven't unraveled or disintegrated.

I have also been known to cut the feet off of tights after I've worn a hole in the toe. And the legs alone, no toe or panty, attached can make nice armwarmers.

Thanks for sharing the good ideas. I am tall and tights rarely fit me properly either. I have turned several into stockings simply by cutting off the legs and attaching them to a garter belt. No sewing or hemming needed.

    yep, thanks for sharing ^.^
