My blog isn’t normally the place to broadcast my political views (it’s all about the nylon love here), but I will admit that one of my pet peeves is “nude” or “flesh-toned” hosiery. I have no problems with the actual color of the hosiery, of course. My issue is that “nude” or “flesh-toned” shades tend to be equated with a certain skin color…one that is certainly not “nude” for everybody.
Because of that, I’ve made it my little side project to find “nude” hosiery that works for darker skinned women, and my search has brought me to several brands that I’m very excited about.
Let’s start with pantyhose. My new job has me wearing something on my legs almost everyday. For business purposes, I believe tights and pantyhose are infinitely more professional than gartered stockings, primarily because the fantasy of showing off a welt or garter bump is considerably less exciting when your boss may see it. Similarly, I believe a sheer look is more professional than colors or patterns.

With that in mind, the Pretty Polly Naturals line from MyTights gets two thumbs way, way up from me. Available in 5 and 8 denier versions, these tights are made to match your skintone, giving a barely there look. In addition, the sheer denier makes them exceptionally cool for hot and humid summer days. I own the 8 denier Naturals in Bronze, and they blend so well with my legs that I didn’t even notice they’d laddered until I took them off. With four colors available and prices starting at $7.50, I’m confident most women can something to like here.
However, if you can’t be swayed from wearing stockings, then may I suggest the Marissa sandalfoots from Stockingirl? Ultrasheer and ultrashiny, these 100% nylon, 15 denier stockings have a silicon wash that makes your legs look freshly oiled.
I own these in the South Pacific shade, and both I and Newboy were amazed how well they blended with my skintone. It literally looked like I had nothing on my legs. These stockings are extremely comfortable, but definitely fit true to size. I’d recommend consulting the size chart, or even calling for assistance if this is your first time ordering 100% nylon hose. At only $18.99, I believe the Marissas are a bargain, especially if you wear stockings everyday.
Finally, there are some days you just have to wear fishnets, but don’t feel like drawing the kind of attention of a pair of traditional black nets would bring. Most “nude” fishnets are much too light for me, therefore I was happy to find that Secrets in Lace offers fishnet tights in the color “coffee.” At $26.99, these are a bit pricey, however they blend well (giving subtle texture to my legs), are very comfortable, and quite long-lasting.
As always, if you have a favorite “nude” brand or any comments or questions on this post at all, I’d love to hear from you.

Great post! This is how dumb I am. I kept reading "'South Pacific shade,' and thinking, "but she's in the Pacific Northwest, I don't get it."
I should have several pairs of stockings taken away for doofiness, but not my Love Me fishnets.
I appreciate you saying this, Lisa. Your comment really means a lot to me.
You make a very valid point and how many stocking and pantyhose manufacturers' cater for the woman of colour? I think there is nothing more alluring (bearing in mind what you say about work) than trying to guess if a woman is wearing nylon on her legs the lower the denier the more exciting the game! I love that almost not there or natural skin tone you mention on tights and stockings.
Nick :)
Thanks so much for commenting on this post, Nick!
I've been really into colored and patterned tights, but now that I'm wearing hosiery more often I definitely see the appeal of sheer, "nude" stockings. If nothing else, they make your legs look fabulous.
And I also agree with your first insight. I hope other companies follow Pretty Polly's lead (just to name one) and start making sheer stockings in a variety of skintones.
Fishnets are my favourites – and my husbands!!
I have been searching the internet for views on "to hose or not to hose" in the work place before starting an anti-hose campaign at my job. As a dark skinned African American woman I must pass on a treasure in sheer "nude" hose I have been wearing for years, Ultra Sheer by Berkshire in Coffee Brown. I purchase them on line by the dozens and have been challenged (accused) more than once that I am not wearing hose.
Thanks so much for your comment, Anonymous. I'm glad you've found a brand that works for you, and you've given me something else to try as well!
Thank you so much for this blog. I've searched the internet high and low in search of sheer stockings for African American women. I've resorted to wearing slacks in the fall and winter because of the lack of variety in nylons. Again, Thank You so much for providing such great options. Thanks to Anonymous for offering another great option.
I'm really happy you were able to find useful information here, Robyn. Thanks for stopping by. :-)
You are my hero!! I've been looking hit or miss for great "nude" brown hose forever.
I just stop wearing stockings because the nude color isn't my color and it's too much hassle to find a color that matches our skin tone. I can't even remember the last time I wore stockings.
The nude color bras and slips are the same way. The lingerie industry acts as if darker skins don't exist. I was a Victoria's secret and they had a sale on panties and the sale colors were black, white, pink, and nude. Well, I looked at nude and it was certainly for white females. I then saw a pair that were a nude shade for me. I went to the counter and was told they were not on sale because they were not the nude color. I told the sales person that the color is nude for me and the color on sale is definitely not nude for anyone who is not white.
A white female who was stocking the underwear and fixing the displays overheard us talking and she said, "You are right. The color you want would be actually nude for you. The other one isn't. Both colors should be on sale."
The next time I went to Victoria's Secret the darker skin toned underwear were on sale with the rest of the nude underwear.
Hello! I Googled nude pantyhose for women of color and I ran across this site. I truly appreciate your blog.
I'm about the same color as you and clicked on your Pretty Polly link. The site says it has 4 colors, but I only see 3 colors. I looked for the Bronze one that you get and the darkest they appear to go on that site is 'Tan'. Would you please help me find the exact color that you purchase? Thank you so much!

Hey ladies I was up searching allll night :-S n found these- pendeza tights- http://www.pendeza-pantyhose.com/
They are new apparently but I am a bit skeptical as there is no info regarding their nylon/lycra content… no info about durability if they are appropriate for dance/ carnival (really only need em for sweet sweet carnival :-D) or anything regarding customer reviews. If anyone is in a location that they ship to please purchase and let the rest of us know what the quality and colours are really like? They don't ship to my island in the caribbean) but if they are worthwhile I am gonna make the trip to wherever they do that is closeby and I'll be buying up 100 of them before they go out of business… cus we all know the colours in our shades don't stay on the market very long before they are discontinued :-S
Keep a girl posted, love the blog n this post btw Mizz Addict ;-)

Hi Aneyeball – girls! I’ve been wearing Pendeza 50 tone tights for some time now, thoroughly recommend!
They are very tightfitting (Lycra/elastane) and don’t sag even after a days wear at work.
They have a light sheen, and I love the colour! I have olive complexion so the 50 tone are noticeable, but as I am very tall (6 feet 2 ins!) I love drawing attention to my legs – but that’s me! If you get the correct tone for your skin, they will look natural.
Have fun – love Josie
heeeeeeeeeeeeeey wait a sec I found the info I was looking for… it really does pay to be persistent :=D ok on the uk site below it says Style: Reinforced Toe, Sheer To Waist
Composition: 82% Polyamide, 18% Elastane
